Product Information

Former musician Jonathan Parker makes his feature film directorial debut with a modern retelling of the Herman Melville classic, BARTLEBY THE SCRIVENER. The off-kilter comedy follows the boss of a public records company (played by David Paymer), whose life slowly begins to unravel when he hires a new employee. The quiet and reserved clerk, Bartleby (Crispin Glover), is at first a welcome addition to the office, especially when compared to the distracting presences of sultry secretary Vivian (Glenne Headly), macho Rocky (Joe Piscopo), and whiny Ernie (Maury Chaykin). But when the boss's requests for Bartleby to perform any tasks other than filing, his enigmatic replies of, "I would prefer not to," begin to test everyone's patience. The situation becomes more troubling when the boss learns that Bartleby has, in fact, begun to sleep in the office. Fed up with his inability to perform the simplest of tasks, he fires Bartleby, who remains in the office nonetheless. Finally, the boss moves locations in order to break free from the mysterious void of a man, who has formed a strange attachment to the building. This doesn't provide a refuge from Bartleby's presence, however, which continues to haunt him at every waking moment. A colorful and quirky tale, BARTLEBY features another bizarre performance from the always-eccentric Glover.

    bartleby

    For what it is worth the movie, I believe, as surreal as it was shot, is as true to today's wage earner's soul as can possibly be portrayed. Melville wrote this in the 19th century but it actually describes the inner feelings of all wage earners throughout all of time, i.e. from the very beginnings of time through whatever future remains for the human race. For those who do not earn a wage, you would not understand the movie and thus pan it, ridicule it, or dismiss it as trite. I would offer more but let the movie tell the story if you can find this version. It's discontinuation is a shame.

    I'd prefer to love this movie!

    Absolutely LOVE Crispin Glover! Wonderfully strange and tragic film. Funny and engaging character interplay as well as unusual cinematragrophy!

    Bartleby

    The reason I purchased this movie is to help me in my college English class. The teacher showed us half one day and then the other half next class. Since we had to write a paper about the movie and also the book. I figured that it would help me remember things to write a better paper. It worked. I also had told several of my friends about it and they did not believe what I said about batleby's behavior. Now they understand what I was telling them. Thank you

    Great Movie

    This is a very interesting movie. I love this movie because it is so random. The characters are all so unique. I saw it a few years ago when it first came out and I enjoy it as much now as I did then. I would definitely recommend this movie to the adventurous movie goer.
