Cannot Recommend it More Highly
We have watched this 5 times. Gregory Peck did not personally like General MacArthur but studied the man and grew to admire and respect him and accepted the role. He does an exceptional job in presenting to us who MacArthur really was. We are so fortunate as Americans to have had this man as a leader who refused to accept defeat and had integrity to keep his word. I cannot recommend this more highly to those who want an accurate portrayal of MacArthur. Long before this film was released I was in the Philippines, It's a Catholic country. In the kitchen of the house I visited was a Crucifix hanging on the wall. Hanging next to the Crucifix was a picture of General MacArthur!! That's how much the people of that country respect him and Gregory Peck and the writers of this film are to ... We have watched this 5 times. PLOT: 5 STAR GENERAL BIO OF GENERAL DOUGLAS MACARTHUR from early WW2 to Korea where he was removed by President Truman. this movie starts where MacArthur is ordered by FDR to leave Manilla while under heavy bombardment by the Japanese shortly after the start of WW2 in the Pacific who utters the phrase "I shall return" so MacArthur makes decisions as the tides turn in favor of the Allies MacArthur (wonderful Gregory Peck) persuades FDR to give the PHILLIPINES the go ahead and he takes it back and heads toward Japan but the dropping of the ATOM BOMB~brings a halt to any invasion plans he had~ so we see how MacArthur takes and turns Japan into a modern country with advances for women. AS the always outspoken Mac often goes toes to toes with the NEW President Truman they have a ... MacArthur (DVD, 2001) The Right Man for the Job
This is a well told narration chronicling the factual chess match that was the Japanese War in the Pacific. From the time of the fall of the Philippines in early 1942, through the intense fighting that eventually culminated with the dropping of two atomic bombs on the Japanese Empire and their eventual surrender, this movie covers the leadership of Five-Star General of the U.S. Army, General Douglas MacArthur. He was disliked and ridiculed by many, including the Presidents he served. He was pompous, and arrogant, and no doubt, the best man for the job. He understood that we could very well lose the war, and after it was won, by his policy of respect and ethical treatment of the Japanese, insured that a former enemy would be transformed into one of our greatest allies for decades to ... This movie is history and should be required viewing for all school children.
