Product Information

The Hells Angels. The Bandidos. Asian triads. Russian mobsters and corrupt cops. Even the KKK. Just part of a day's work for Alex Caine, an undercover agent who has seen it all. Alex Caine started life as a working-class boy from Quebec who always thought he'd end up in a blue-collar job. But after a tour in Vietnam and a stretch in prison on marijuana-possession charges, he fell into the cloak-and-dagger world of a contracted agent or kite: infiltrating criminal groups that cops across North America and around the globe were unable to penetrate themselves. Thanks to his quick-wittedness and his tough but unthreatening demeanour, Caine could fit into whatever unsavoury situation he found himself. Over twenty-five years, his assignments ran the gamut from bad-ass bikers to triad toughs. When a job was over, he'd slip away to a new part of the continent or world, where he would assume a new identity and then go back to work on another group of bad guys. Told with page-turning immediacy, Befriend and Betray gives a candid look behind the scenes at some familiar police operations and blows the lid off others that law enforcement would much prefer to keep hidden. And it offers an unvarnished account of the toll such a life takes, one that often left Caine to wonder who he really was, behind those decades of assumed identities. Or whether justice was ever truly served.

Reviews
"Alex Caine's memoir of his life as a confidential informant is one of the most engaging tales ever told about the deep infiltration of organized crime. His revelations are extraordinary; his story gripping. I couldn't put it down." -William Marsden, coauthor ofThe Road to HellandAngels of Death"Caine is the ultimate actor, inhabiting roles as a big-time drug dealer, border runner, money launderer, hit man, rock-and-roll promoter-all while working as one of the most audacious undercover informants of all time. He turned infiltrating organized crime into an art form. He could easily have become a master criminal himself. Luckily, he worked for the good guys. Amazingly, he survived his encounters with the Hong Kong Triads and Bandidos bikers and the KKK and has returned to tell his fascinating and nearly unbelievable true-crime story." -Guy Lawson, coauthor ofThe Brotherhoods,  "Alex Caine's memoir of his life as a confidential informant is one of the most engaging tales ever told about the deep infiltration of organized crime. • What a waste of my time.

What a joke... This guy is couldn't write his way out of a paper bag. This book definitely belongs in the FICTION section. Alex Caine has literally utilized a pile of police reports, news articles and book excerpts to create his own books about how he supposedly infiltrated then Bandidos, Hells Angels, Asian Triads, Russian Mobsters, KKK and corrupt cops. Really Alex? I am an expert on the Bandidos motorcycle club and I can tell by what Mr. Caine has written is that he is not very familiar with them. He claims to have been a patch holding member but he didn’t even get the club basics correct. I am talking about simple stuff that any brand spanking new prospect would know. He simply presents police reports and news stories from the last 40 years as facts and tries to pass the whole thing ...

  • Great Book - AMAZING Life!

I like to feel like I can observe danger - from a distance. Fear, murder, drugs, prostitution, intimidation, human trafficking and on and on and on. Only not in LA or Chicago, but in little towns like the ones I might have lived in. My biggest fear in beginning to read this book was the Mr Caine would spend several chapters on himself, his life, his motivation, etc... basically the dull stuff. The first chapter, sure enough - his childhood. But it lasted only a couple pages and was interesting. Same with the rest of his formative years, just a chapter (and a good one, at that) and then you're off to chase drug dealers, infiltrate biker gangs and on and on. This guy is a hero. He did stuff that would have been impossible for me. If you have any interest in the seedier side of American ...

  • A must read for anyone in or interested in Biker World

I have read several books on Motorcycle Clubs written by Bikers and By cops. Very good books but they all seem to show only one side or the other. This book was not written by a Biker or a cop. The auther was a informant, working for different agencies on several operations. I thought his views where very honest and showed thing as they really where. Very well written and full of action. I will read this book again and again and share it with many friends.

  • should be fiction

he lost me when he started talking about military exploits that do not ring of truth.....if that was bulls&^t then the rest of it probably is as well. I don't like wormy types and this guys definitely fits that mold but usually they have an interesting story ..............this guy not so much. don't waste your time with this book
