Great acting & romantic chemistry
AN AFFAIR TO REMEMBER is a romance. Is there any doubt about how it will end? By today's standards, the film is slow-moving and has several unnecessary scenes. But the acting ability of stars Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr, and the chemistry between them, makes it work. When the two meet, both are engaged to other people. Instead of taking the predictable route and making their fiances jerks, both are nice, attractive people. Kerr's fiance, especially, stands by her even though she is in love with Grant. He is more concerned about Kerr's happiness than his own. What a guy! There are moments of comedy, and moments of heartbreaking drama. The tear-jerking moments draw you in even when you are aware you are being shamelessly manipulated. Dead grandma...waiting 7 hours at the top of the ... AN AFFAIR TO REMEMBER is a romance. This is the ultimate love story. I can't even imagine how many movies were made by copying this story line or some portion of it over the last fifty years. There isn't a woman alive who has ever watched this film with dry eyes; a lot of men too! This story begins on a ship from Europe to New York. Nikki Ferrante (Grant) is a world famous gigolo who has finally decided to marry and settle down, with a fortune of two-hundred million dollars, and a pretty good looking woman too. He is headed to America. Terry McKay is a singer and entertainer from Boston and she is engaged to very successful business man in New York City. They meet on the ship and instantly fall in love. After a short stop in the South of France to visit Nikki's grandmother, Terry finds out that Nikki is quite an accomplished ... This is the ultimate love story. Nikki waits for hours, and when she doesn't show up, believes that he has been jilted. He is a changed man, and no longer has it in him to be a womanizer. This hurt in his life has emotionally changed him, and now the real artist begins to bloom. Terry is wheelchair bound. Her condition can possibly be fixed by very expensive surgery, but she can't let her former fiancee pay for it. Nikki doesn't know about her condition, and she can't go to him unless she can walk to him. In the mean time, Nikki's grandmother has died, and a shawl that Terry admired when she visited, has been sent on to Nikki for her. Quite by accident, shortly before Christmas, the two run into eachother at the theater. He has no idea she needs a wheelchair. Just by friendship they are both there with their former fiancees, so you can just imagine what they both thought. After they leave, they are both devastated by the run in. Nikki decides to push the situation and looks Terry up in the phone book for her address. He is about to leave on a cruise back to Europe, and brings her the shawl from his grandmother. Both are truly exited and also uncomfortable by the meeting. Nikki acts as if he didn't show up for their meeting, and acts like he wants to apologize for standing her up. She on the other hand, acts like she was there and was outraged that he wasn't. He gives her the shawl and she is tearful that the lovely old woman was gone. As he is leaving, Nikki looks back and sees Terry sitting sideways on the sofa with the shawl over her head and shoulders. He remarks that he had once painted her like that, but never sold it, because it was too personal, but a woman came into the shop in a wheelchair and liked it, but had no money, so he told his clerk to give it to her. Now, all this clicks in his mind, and he rushes into her bedroom and there was the portrait on her wall. He now realizes what has happened. Together they decide to go forward and make a life together. . . And they lived happily ever after. . . Great Movie!!!

Good old movie for the younger generation!
Nice to see a love-story movie without cursing. Very entertaining even for the younger set as I had never seen a Carey Grant movie before except "the Bishop's Wife". I only watched The Bishop's Wife movie because if was Christmas and popped up on my internet. He was terrific in that movie so I decided to watch Love Affair on DVD. Such a cute movie to watch! I need to watch more of his!

The Movie Other Movies Refer To In Moments Of Romance!
I have never seen the original LOVE AFFAIR made prior to this version of the story with Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr, but I have seen the one later one with Warren Beatty. This one always catches my heart in a way the Beatty version does not. I think it is the classic styling of the movie and the era that makes it so romantic. The characters are real enough for the film’s time, but like a character in a romantic book, there is room for your own imagination to fill in a bit here and there. Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr are sophisticated and elegant and struggling to be more than they have been when fate steps in. All the elements that first bring them together then separate them and finally allow them to find each other again are timeless. This is the movie other movies refer to when ... An affair to remember
I love this movie. It is one of my favorites. I love old classic movies from the nineteen fourties to the sixties. The only thing I didn't like about my purchase is the movie isn't in widescreen. All those old movies are widescreen. So why do they sell them any other way? I notice most of the auctions for these old movies are not in widescreen or they don't tell you what format the movie is in. So, then you have to email to find out. Takes to much time. When I want to buy I don't want to have to email and email and email. It appears that most don't know what format means. They put dvd for the format or other things. Very annoying.
