Moving film about life under the Taliban
If you are looking for a feel good movie - move on. Osama is a stark look at the lives of women under the Taliban's rule. It is masterfully shot, showing beauty in a war torn country and the subtle everyday rituals of the Afghan people. In the extra features, the Director talked about the story being a compilation of a couple of girls' stories. The realism and sorrow that is portrayed is a perfect example of how oppressed men and women were under Taliban rule. While watching the film I felt so thankful that I was born in the United States and yet filled with sadness that so many women hated themselves or their daughters for being women because of the corrupted teachings of the Taliban. This film has a realistic story line that delves into the everyday lives of Afghans. Prepare to be ... If you are looking for a feel good movie - move on. 'Osama", the movie. Not what you're thinking.
Enlightening drama that follows the plight of a child after the Taliban invasion. It gives the viewer a perspective of the impact of the Taliban invasions on "life" from the experiences of this child and her family (from personal liberties and lifestyle, and structure and function of family and community, to acceptable societal roles and behavior, ...... and punishment). This is a foreign film with subtitles. The film kept my attention throughout it's entirety.Enlightening drama that follows the plight of a child after the Taliban invasion. A MOVIE WHICH SHOWS YOU HOW A GOOD PART OF THE 3RD WORLD SURVIVES
IT IS AN AWESOME EXPERIENCE VIEWING THE MOVIE.ONE CANNOT IMAGINE THAT IN THIS DAY AND AGE THERE ARE SUCH FANATICS WHO REVEL IN TREATING WOMEN AS CHATTELS.There were some shocking scenes in the film, like the one in which the girl child is imprisoned in an open well in she whimpers and cries for her mother,and when she is eventually drawn out of it there is BLOOD dripping down her legs which indicates that she has attained womanhood, and thereby is banished to a prison,because her mother and grandmother disguised her as a boy and sent her out to work so that she could earn some money for the family.Another moving scene is where the judge of a tribunal obviously under the influence of an interested party decrees, much against her will, that she be married off to AN OLD BEARDED MAN,who takes ... I echo many of the sentiments expressed by past reviewers. This is a well-done inside look at life in Afghanistan under the Taliban. But man, is it depressing! Given its subject matter, how could it not be? The ending seemed rushed. It appeared like they were on a time limit when it ended. As the final credits roll, you're ready to either kill yourself, or take some action on behalf of global civil rights. At this time, as the current administration wants to back away from our country's moral obligation to fight for human rights, I found the film's message even more heartbreaking.
