Figures Don't Lie, But Liars Can Sure Figure
This is the book that should replace the text we had to study in our high school economics course. What is more, it should be required reading before anyone is handed a voter registration or credit card. Overstatements? I don't think so. For over 40 years it has been the bible for "the rest of us". Those of us who look at the "facts and figures" presented by politicians and hucksters and say "it adds up, but it ain't right" have found an easy to understand source of rebuttal to the assault on our brains and pocketbooks. Although the figures Huff uses should probably have an extra zero added at the end to compensate for inflation, his basic concepts are so true and easy to understand that anyone can follow him to that long sought juncture where ... This is the book that should replace the text we had to study in our high school economics course. Classic book for understanding statistics
I use this book in the classroom to help students discover that numbers/data can be used to create different perceptions. They are not just absolute facts like bricks, but pieces in buildings that can take many shapes - good, bad, ugly, etc. It opens their eyes to how statistics can create misperceptions or help discern truth.

This book is a classic that was originally published over 40 years ago and continues to educate us about the nature and use of Statistics in everyday life. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to understand how to communicate with statistics and how to understand the power of playing devil's advocate with statistics. My mother always said that the "glass was half empty" but my uncle maintained that the "glass was half full". Both of them were right and that's the nature of statistical inference.
