What's Not to Like?
Popular children's author Louis Sachar converts his most intricate book into a screenplay, and director Andrew Davis, in collaboration, brings it gloriously to the big screen! Although I'm surrounded by a sea of terrific young 11 and 12 year old reviewers, "Holes" is for everyone! A young cast of actors, all talented, couples with Jon Voight as the over-the-top Camp Greenlake superintendent, "Mr. Sir". Greenlake is a juvenile detention camp in the desert, and while conditions there are pretty oppressive, they are downplayed enough to make the movie safe for 9 and 10 year old viewers, as well. The charm of the book, and also the movie, is to tell the tale of the Yelnats clan, revolving it around young Stanley Yelnats IV's incarceration for something he didn't do. Flashback is used to ... Flashback is used to revisit the era that both Stanley's great-grandfather and grandfather lived in. These flashback scenes, amazingly, focus not on the Yelnats, but more on the women who inflicted the family curse on them, arising in terrific roles for Eartha Kitt (as gypsy Madam Zeroni) and stagecoach robber Kissin' Kate Barlow (played by the luminous and talented Patricia Arquette). Modern day is not without its own bad girl, with Sigourney Weaver as the Warden, who rules the camp with an iron fist. The Warden has her own agenda for the holes that the boys are forced to dig in the desert, and she's quirky, evil, and larger than life, looming over Voight and "Dr."(Tim Blake Nelson). Weaver's "Ex-c-uuuuuu-se Me?" line, used over and over in the film, is terrifying! The audience is caught up in the action from the opening screen, and given a couple of young anti-heroes that are worth their weight in gold. A cameo by the irresistible Dule Hill from "The West Wing", is also notable. "Holes" is perhaps the best family film of the last couple of years, and an outstanding example of what good filmmaking is all about! Highly recommended for sheer enjoyment!

I would first like to say that I think Holes starring Shia LaBeouf, Sigourney Weaver and Jon Voight is under rated. I think this is a great film not just for the family but for any one that enjoys an all around good film. I don't want to spoil the film so I will just give a quick synopsis; Stanley Yelnats (Shia LaBeouf) is committed to a crime and sent to a work at camp for young offenders. At the camp, Warden Walker (Sigourney Weaver) makes all the imprisoned kids dig Holes in a dried up lake bed to find a lost treasure that her family has been seeking for years. The back story about the treasure with Wild West flash backs along with the way every thing is tied together makes this a great film. No big crazy explosions, no wacky SFX or long car chases, but a great story with great actors. ... Shawshank for kids
Based on award winning book, my older grandchildren talked me into taking them to this Disney movie when it was in theaters. Now it's becoming a favorite of my young grandchildren. An innocent young man is falsely accused and sent to serve time under the watchful eye of a warden with selfish alterior motives. But truth and kindness win out and everyone learns valuable lessons.

My kids are 7 and 9, they really liked this movie. We have NOT read the book by Louis Sachar. The movie tell a story about a boy "Stanley Yelnats" that was blamed for something he did not do... the movie shows life is not always FAIR. Is an ancient family curse to blame? The boy meets new FRIENDS that end up being real FRIENDS. We also love the WOODPECKER song. If only, if only... the woodpecker sighs... the bark on the tree is as soft as the skies... as a wolf waits below.. hungry & lonely... He cries to the MOON.... IF ONLY... IF ONLY... My kids loved the part of the movie that would flashback to the WILD WILD WEST and the OLD COUNTRY. It helped explain the whole story.My kids are 7 and 9, they really liked this movie.
