As president of the African National Congress and head of South Africa's anti-apartheid movement, he was instrumental in moving the nation toward multiracial government and majority rule. He is revered everywhere as a vital force in the fight for human rights and racial equality. The foster son of a Thembu chief, Mandela was raised in the traditional, tribal culture of his ancestors, but at an early age learned the modern, inescapable reality of what came to be called apartheid, one of the most powerful and effective systems of oppression ever conceived. In classically elegant and engrossing prose, he tells of his early years as an impoverished student and law clerk in Johannesburg, of his slow political awakening, and of his pivotal role in the rebirth of a stagnant ANC and the formation of its Youth League in the 1950s.     Nelson Mandela's Autobiography

    I bought this book because I was interested in learning more about the personal life of Nelson Mandela. I was not disappointed! His book is great because it provides insight into his tribal life in African to when he moves into the city, goes to college, experiences racism, and eventually becomes the political leader he is famed for. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in Mandela or the political history of South Africa. Although the book is rather lengthy, it is broken into a handful of stages of Mandela's life and then into smaller chapters. His writing is very easy to read and easily followed. Mandela explains all concepts clearly in perfect English. This is an outstanding book.

    Inspirational

    It is a great book. Very inspirational. I would def. recommend that you read it in college. I read it as part of an assignment in my African Civilizations class and it really helped me understand apartheid and the many problems that plague Africa as a content.

    good expirience

    I started reading this book when I had checked it out from the library, but soon decided that I wanted to underline certain passages, plus start my own glossery of the many acronyms he used.
