Synopsis
In this touching memoir of his boyhood on a farm in the Ozark foothills, Harry Middleton joins the front rank of nature writers alongside Edward Hoagland and Annie Dillard. It is the year1965, a year rife with change in the world---and in the life of a boy whose tragic loss of innocence leads him to the healing landscape of the Ozarks. Haunted by indescribable longing, twelve-year-old Harry is turned over to two enigmatic guardians, men as old as the hills they farm and as elusive and beautiful as the trout they fish for---with religious devotion. Seeking strength and purpose from life, Harry learns from his uncle, grandfather, and their crazy Sioux neighbor, Elias Wonder, that the pulse of life beats from within the deep constancy of the earth, and from one's devotion to it. Amidst the rhythm of an ancient cadence, Harry discovers his home: a farm, a mountain stream, and the eye of a trout rising., In this touching memoir of his boyhood on a farm in the Ozark foothills, Harry Middleton joins the front rank of nature writers alongside Edward Hoagland and Annie Dillard. • Great reading!

The Earth Is Enough is a wonderful collection of the storied of the author's time spent with his grandfather and great uncle. It is extremely well written and hard to put down. It brought memories I had of my own grandfather to me. Excellent writing and stories! I highly recommend all his books.

  • Best fishing book ever written

This is the best fishing book ever written, partly because it is only partly about fishing. The title says it all - The Earth is Enough. The author places humans in their proper place as part of a grand and marvelous natural world, a world that includes trout.

  • Outstanding Read!

I had been told that if I read one book about flyfishing this should be the one. This book did not disappoint. I have a collection of books on flyfishing but for some reason this one was not even on the radar. I am so glad I got it. It is insightful and moving. I highly recommend this book.

  • Passage of time, wisdom gained

There are books that can deliver a story to entertain and there are those that inspire reflection about life's journey. This is one of those books that stay with you and call you to reread it over a lifetime.
