Great for Historical reference, but didn't hold interest of my homesch
This is a fun book when you look at it though the eyes of history. If you are looking for a more modern book for girls....keep looking. This book was written over 100 years ago (give or take) and has some of the language updated but for the most part is kept in tack. That said, the book centers on what girls were encouraged to do 100 years ago (bake, clean, keep house, sew) so for that, it's a great book. My daughter is 7 and we have the Boys Handy book (lots of survival, hunting, etc. in that one) so we were hoping the girls book would be more like that. It's not. It held her interest for a few days but now it's on the shelf. She helps sew, clean and cook but the tone is just too old fashioned even for my TV free, homeschooled girls. The book is full of activities that girls from the turn of the century would have had fun doing. I want my grandkids to learn that not just tv and other media can occupy their time. There are many good skills that can be taught that they may not pick up otherwise but also to see that some arts are not lost forever. It can be used along with some of the historical books that we are reading as well. As the back of the book states, "it's a magical cornucopia of projects, devices, toys, gifts, dolls, recipes, decorations, perfumes, wax and clay modeling, oil and water-color painting and games, all with clear and practical directions for how to make and play them. could have been better, but it's history
was hoping it would be as fun as the boys version but it was the turn of the century and girls had more girl-y things to do. sad, really. would have hoped to find that girls in the early 'teens and 'twenties were more outgoing and adventuresome that we've been otherwise led. still, a solid piece of history.
