Black Sheep One is the first biography of legendary warrior and World War II hero Gregory Boyington. In 1936, Boyington became an aviation cadet and earned the "wings of gold" of a naval aviator. After only a short period on active duty, however, he was "encouraged" to resign from the Marine Corps due to his unconventional behavior. America’s Flawed Hero
Brutally honest account of a seriously flawed man who was morally bankrupt and an alcoholic who became an American Hero and America’s number one Ace Fighter Pilot during WWII. Sincerely appreciated the frank story of his life that made me better understand his actions and better appreciate his accomplishments.

As opposed to Boyington's own self-serving auto-biography, "Bah, Bah, Black Sheep," this well-researched and excellently-written biography of Boyington presents his true story, warts and all. Bruce Gamble, himself a Naval Aviator, gives Boyington all the credit he is due, but nonetheless exposes his character deficits and lies. Altogether, Gamble paints the portrait of a somewhat pathetic individual whose lack of moral fiber and descent into alcoholism marred what could have been a brilliant flying career. Notably, Gamble points out that Boyington lied to the Marine Corps from the very first (on his application to be an aviation cadet)and continued to lie, among other things, about his debts and, more importantly, his actual aerial victories. In the latter regard, he told the Marine ... In the latter regard, he told the Marine Corps he had six aerial victories while serving with the American Volunteer Group in China, while the AVG's records (and his fellow AVG pilots' accounts) show he only had two. Also, as soon as he returned from captivity after WWII he filed a report with the Marine Corps claiming he shot down three Japanese fighters the day he was shot down and captured, January 3, 1944, but only one of these can be confirmed (interestingly, in his book, Boyington only says he shot down two). Nonetheless, the Marine Corps has blindly and uncritically accepted his claims of 28 total victories at face value and still lists him as the top-scoring Marine ace of WWII, whereas the American Fighter Aces Association only credits him with 24 victories and, appropriately, lists Joe Foss with 26 confirmed victories as the top-scoring Marine ace. For anyone interested in Boyington's life, this is a must-read book.

Goes good with Baa Baa Black Sheep
Good balance to Boyington's own "Baa Baa Black Sheep" . . . wish it had more photos , particularly those outside of VMF-214 . . . found it interesting the Black Sheep's comments re their portrayal in BBBS & on the TV screen , and noticing the quantity of war time photos showing front line drinking parties (and drunken trips to Sydney too!) . . . still , it gives a good feel for the men of VMF-214 who fought the Japs .Good balance to Boyington's own "Baa Baa Black Sheep" . . . wish it had more photos , particularly those outside of VMF-214 . . . found it interesting the Black Sheep's comments re their portrayal in BBBS & on the TV screen , and noticing the quantity of war time photos showing front line drinking parties (and drunken trips to Sydney too!) . . . still , it gives a good feel for the men of VMF-214 who fought the Japs .
