Fun unique kids book!
This is one of a few choice library books we checked out that I knew we had to have in our own library. Not only do my kids LOVE this book, it's one that's truly enjoyable to read over and over as an adult. Through Honey Honey Lion, kids learn about the flow of a storyline that builds to a climax, and they also learn about our world, animals, cooperation and the potential consequences of selfishness. What makes this book truly a must-have though is that on top of all these other good things, the illustrations are PHENOMENAL. The African safari is depicted so realistically you feel like you're actually there, and the borders of each page give it an "African" feel. It's just a beautifully done story both audibly and visually. My favorite books are ones the kids learn from and they learn a ... First of all, it's "a story from Africa" so the kids know the story is from another country called Africa which opens their world. They are introduced to that world through the animal world and so they learn about how the animals on the African safari live, cooperate and communicate. The story itself teaches an important lesson - it tells about two real animals, a bird and a badger, who are partners in food-finding and illustrates the consequences of one partner making a very selfish choice. The story follows the bird and badger through their journey to find their meal so the kids learn about travelling from one place to another. Of course they LOVE the surprise ending and it's exciting for them to see the happy ending of the badger out-running the lion. The ending tells the moral of the story - that you need to keep up your end of the bargain in a partnership. All parents need to have this book in their library and even better if you can find the scholastic version with the follow-along CD - Jan Brett does a beautiful job reading the story and all of the environmental sounds and sound effects are great - the kids love it!

Granddaughter's Favorite Illustrator
I am a children's librarian and have led many book discussions with Jan Brett's work. I have to admit this is not my favorite of her many outstanding books. In 2007 this title was nominated for a children's choice award in Illinois and I told my first-grade granddaughter I would buy the book for which she voted. This was it and she was thrilled to have her own copy.

Honey, Honey, Lion!
I love Jan Brett's books and so do many others. She is a wonderful artist. Be sure to visit her website to see a video on how she visited Africa and did research for this book. She also has many art lessons on her website.
