Thomas Harris' best seller is 368 pages that seem to fly by they are so engaging; especially after seeing, "Silence of the Lambs," "Hannibal," & "The Red Dragon." ("Silence," which earned Jodie Foster & Anthony Hopkins Oscars for their splendid performances, is a top 100 all time great classic in the horror & crime genre). "Hannibal Rising" goes into great detail to psychologically explore the inner sanctum of Lecter as the young son of a wealthy Eupropean viscount, who is orphaned as WWII is about to end, when a pack of ruthless German soldiers murder his elders then eat his little sister, Mischa. All of this Hannibal witnesses & survives. He escapes being eaten himself, falls unconscious in the snow & is rescued by Allied soldiers. In a God forsaken orphange, Hannibal won't speak, ... Suffering from severe post traumatic stress disorder, Hannibal's subjected to more violence at the orphange because he won't speak. When throw by a brute in an underground cell in the very home where he used to live in wealth & happiness with his family, he knows how to & does escape. Hannibal is an older teenager by the time he locates the home of his uncle & drop-dead-gorgeous Asian wife, only to find his uncle has died too. She (who lost her entire family at Hiroshima's nuclear bombing) identifies with Hannibal's silent grief & slowly brings him out of it. During this process, she teaches him the ancient martial arts & spiritual practices of her culture. Hannibal develops mastery in martial arts. He's a prodigy as well, who becomes the youngest student to enter medical school. The rage over his sister being devoured in front of him is what empowers him with a super-human type of drive of an avenger of death. As Shakespeare wrote in "The Merchant of Venice" & the detective on Hannibal's trail after he beings brutally murdering & cannibalizing the German war criminals who committed the atrosities he witnessed also says, he's on a rampage for "a pound of flesh for a pound of flesh." The ingenius psychiatrist turned cannibal from "Silence of the Lambs" who Sir Anthony Hopkins immortalized, now has the childhood genesis of his twisted propensities in Harris' novel. Well done, at that, because Lecter can be empathsized with as a severely traumatized child who turns into a madman & vengeful cannibal~

Horrific and disturbing
This book is one of the scariest I’ve ever read. The author is clearly brilliant and I’d have to say that this novel is in my personal Top 10 Favorite novels of all time.
