À propos de ce produit

Product Information

From its beginnings in the 1880s, opalescent glass has enjoyed a widely receptive audience, both in England where it was introduced and here in America where a young but growing market was ready for any touch of brightness and beauty for the hearth and home. Glass authorities Bill Edwards and Mike Carwile, who have written books on carnival and pressed glass and Millersburg crystal, have once again teamed up to present an all-new fifth edition on the ever-popular opalesecnt glass. Glass production by both American and English glass companies from 1880 to 1930 is covered in this new edition. With around 130 new patterns featured, this expanded volume now holds over 850 color photographs. Detailed information on several prominent glass manufacturers is again included, and the attached price guide has been enlarged to include nearly 6,400 pieces in six different colors. A new feature of the price guide is the addition of values for the 'after 1930' section of the book, not priced in previous editions. Standard Encyclopedia of Opalescent Glass, Fifth Edition, is sure to shine on your bookshelf. 2005 values.

  • Essential

I'm a collector of Carnival Glass and a student of early American patterned glass, so I find it helpful to study patterns that precede that period (anything before 1908). Carnival collectors may wonder why some of their pieces have back patterns that are seemingly just stuck on the bottom with no apparent design purpose. This is particularly true when the underside of a piece is not treated with iridizing color. Some marigold pieces that were sprayed with color on the top side have back patterns on clear, uniridized glass that appear as indistinguishable bumps. Inevitably it happens that these glass molds pre-date the Carnival period, and indeed, the pieces had previous lives as opalescent treatments in which the back pattern interchanged through the translucent glass from the bottom. ...

  • Standard Encyclopedia of Opalescent Glass

I really love this book! The patterns are arranged alphabetically throughout the book, with an absolutely gorgeous color picture to represent each one. In the back is a guide that shows the colors made in each pattern, and the current book value of each. Of course, I know to take book values with a grain of salt, but it's still handy to know what they are. The only thing I would add would be an index by design feature that lists the patterns that have that feature, i.e., roses, or shells, but I can understand what an undertaking that would be, and as quickly as I think I'd like it, I can forgive the authors for not including such a thing. One more reason I like it: I got it at a very good price, from an excellent seller. Jayni Mosher eBay seller texpert2

  • Best General Guide to Early American Opalescent Glass

This fifth edition of the STANDARD ENCYCLOPEDIA OF OPALESCENT GLASS is outstanding -- it is currently the best general guide to early American Opalescent glass. Edwards & Carwile's regularly updated STANDARD ENCYCLOPEDIA guides to various kinds of glassware are all characterized by a drive to include new pieces, add information and correct small errors from one edition to the next. Glass collectors are lucky to have these guides; in the glass collectors' world, no other series is as comprehensive in its scope. This is my favorite of Edwards & Carwile's Standard Encylopedia volumes, because the STANDARD ENCYCLOPEDIA OF OPALESCENT GLASS provides dates of manufacture for almost every piece, important information often omitted from field guides about carnival, pressed and opalescent ...

  • This is beautifully illustrated and informative guide.

I decided to buy this book about opalescent glass for identification of items and for the price guide. I like it very much for the beautiful pictures and information. I buy and sell opalescent glass and wanted to know if I was in the ball park for pricing and buying. It has helped me in both areas. It covers a span of production time and glass makers and companies from pre-1930's to after the 1930's with a lot of additional information and history. I like it better than some other books of identification I have purchased, because it is a hard cover book in excellent condition, for the clarity of the descriptions within the book, and all of the colorful illustrations.

  • Great overview of opalescent glass

Although this book doesn't provide tons of details, it does give a short overview of tons of opalescent patterns. I have been able to identify almost all of my opalescent glass from this one book.
