Product Information

When released theatrically in 1932, FREAKS was met with near universal disgust by critics and audiences alike, lasting in theatres for only a short time in the states and banned in England. The film stars Harry Earles as Hans, a suave midget who belongs to the sideshow of a seedy circus and who makes the mistake of falling in love with the beautiful Cleopatra, one of the "normal" circus performers. Learning that Hans is about to inherit a fortune, Cleopatra agrees to marry Hans even though she abhors him, planning to steal his money and get rid of him. When the freaks of the circus, who keep a watchful eye on Cleopatra, discover her scheme, they plan to exact an unforgettable revenge. Far more unsettling than Browning's best known horror film, DRACULA, FREAKS has long been neglected due to its subject matter, even though it is a genuinely effective film. Gripping and often creepy, FREAKS manages to humanize its main performers, even looking at them with a sense of awe. By contrast, the "normal" performers in the film are largely hateful creatures who turn out to be much more repellant than their deformed colleagues. Both an excellent horror film and a unique look at the lives of sideshow performers, FREAKS is a chilling movie whose final ten minutes are some of the most harrowing in all of cinema.

    Freaks DVD

    Seen the movie several times before. This is the first time I've been able to see the deleted scenes, commentary and interviews. I enjoyed hearing how the actors were happy to be able to work and earn a living and how they lived normal lives and enjoyed their day jobs. I'm so tired of hearing what other people think is "right for everyone!" The interviews and commentary allows these people to speak for themselves. Overall very interesting movie and again the information on director and actors is a plus!

    Fearing what we do not understand or that which is mis-understood.

    I was walking in a parking garage ready to attend a sales conference with a major company that I was working for in Philadelphia. Two of the other Regional Managers and I was talking when suddenly the female R.M. began running. When we caught up with her she appoligized for her actions but had spotted a midget walking behind us. She began to share her fear. What ???, I thought, afraid of midgets (little people). Especially, a professional person such as her. I might run away from a snake but certainly not a small person. We bagan to talk and she shared how she had seen a movie when she was young about a circus and there were abnorma people in it. I right away said I remember a movie like that and I was petrified in the last ten or fifteen minutes of the movie. After the conference, I ...

    Cult movie must have!

    From the Siamese twins to the half-man. Midgets to pinheads, where normal is abnormal. This is a must have movie for any cult film collection. Tod Browning , who was at one time a side show contortionist, direct this classic circus freak show. Giving us a different view of the inner working of the old time side shows. And show us just how close the circus family of oddities has become, and their view of the so called normal world around them. Gooble-gobble, gooble-gobble, we accept her, we accept her, will ring in your ears and you will not look upon a special person again without wondering just who the real freaks of the world are.

    One Of Us!! One Of Us!! Gooble-Gobble!!

    I just had to own this classic. Amazing movie, especially for its time. You come to have great compassion for the "freaks" in this movie who are more normal than the "normal" people. Not only did I get the movie because I wanted to see it again (own it), I wanted my kids (they're teen agers) to have a chance to watch it just in case - heaven forbid - it becomes one of the forgotten oldies. You'll come away feeling a bit more compassionate for those who may be a little different, and look at the "beautiful people" with a sharper eye. Great movie - great team of performers - great vision by Tod Browning.

    1935 time capsule

    The movie 'Freaks' is a capsule in time from 89 years ago. The underlying interests have changed little but the story uses deformed challenged people. Melancholy pervades but there is a curious attraction to the film.
