For the historian, Olympic sports fan, or filmmaker
It's tough for a American born in 1962 to really objectively review this film; it is a straight-forward documentary capturing the 1936 Olympics. Leni Riefenstahl had already established her mastery of light and drama in other works, and the condition of the print is a little distracting in the digital age. I bought it to see the history and to watch how she created what was then hailed unconditionally as a masterpiece. Perhaps the fact that much sports coverage does what she did now on a routine basis jades me a little. However, she appears to have had access, via pits dug close to some of the action, than would not be allowed today. But, she was the first to do such coverage, and the angles are still fresh in concept. If you are a historian of the 1936 Olympics, it goes without ... Fascinating look at Hitler's Germany
In 1936, Hitler invited Riefenstahl to film the Olympic Games in Berlin, a film which Riefenstahl claimed had been commissioned by the International Olympic Committee. She also went to Greece to take footage of the games' original site at Olympia, where she was aided by Greek photographer Nelly's. This material became Olympia, a successful film which has since been widely noted for its technical and aesthetic achievements. She was one of the first filmmakers to use tracking shots in a documentary, placing a camera on rails to follow the athletes' movement, and she is noted for the slow motion shots included in the film. Riefenstahl's work on Olympia has been cited as a major influence in modern sports photography. Although Joseph Goebbels told Riefenstahl to ignore ... She also conducted an affair with American gold medalist Glenn Morris, whom she thought she would marry. Riefenstahl appeared on the cover of American Time magazine on February 17, 1936 for their Olympic coverage. Olympia was very successful in Germany after it premiered for Hitler's 49th birthday in 1938, and its international debut led Riefenstahl to embark on an American publicity tour in an attempt to secure commercial release. In 1937, Riefenstahl told a reporter for the Detroit News: "To me, Hitler is the greatest man who ever lived. He truly is without fault, so simple and at the same time possessed of masculine strength."] She arrived in New York City in November 1938, five days before Kristallnacht; when news of the event reached America, Riefenstahl maintained that Hitler was innocent. Walter Winchell declared her "as pretty as a swastika." Invitations for her appearances in Hollywood were suspended, and Riefenstahl's publicity tour dissolved into disaster as she drew protests. Riefenstahl later said that a planned run for the film at Radio City Music Hall was cancelled in the uproar. In California, Walt Disney was one of the few who agreed to meet with her, although only in private. She also met with Henry Ford. Ads taken out in the trade press by the Hollywood Anti-Nazi League for the Defense of American Democracy proclaimed: "There is no room in Hollywood for Leni Riefenstahl." This is a fascinating look of Hitler's Germany before the nation's decline into hell.

An irreplaceable piece of history. Well worth the price.
This movie is fascinating in so many ways. It is beautiful; beautifully done and it captures the beauty of amazing athleticism. It is a study in technique, both in technique of filming sports and in the changes in the techniques required to win in a sport today (for instance, watching gymnastic routines reminds us of how far the sport has evolved). And it is a look at Nazi Germany. A chance to watch the astounding production of an underlying propaganda and realize from our perspective now what a frightening, world deceiving feat this was. In the end, though, if I am truthfully answering "Why did I buy this product?" I have to say it's because there is an amazing closeup shot of my dad in the 8 oar crew receiving the victory wreath from the man in front of him and passing it over his ... Great film, great product, great quality. Excellent...
The film is great, simply art put on film. Leni was truly a mastermind!!! Apart from that the DVD was new, sealed and obvioulsy worked fine. The quality is great too. And also the price was a very good deal.
