The biggest difference in the new Van Halen is the intellectual bent of Cherone's lyrics, which address everything from exercising your right to vote ("Ballot Or The Bullet") to the two-faced tendencies of politicians ("Fire In The Hole.") The erudite lyrical approach seems to have forced the band towards a more controlled manner of playing that is no longer in line with their balls-to-the-wall excesses of yore. "How Many Say I" doesn't even feature any of Eddie Van Halen's guitar. Instead, Ed provides piano accompaniment straight out of a sweeping John Tesh epic. That's not to say that Eddie Van Halen is ready to give up his guitar-hero mantle anytime soon, but rather that his palette has broadened. His usual combination of melodic flow and dexterous fretwork is all over "Without You," while "Neworld" and "Primary" continue in the experimental vein of instrumentals that the band has occasionally explored in the past.

Van Halen III, Gary's Only Chance at RNR Stardom
What can we say about VH III. I got this CD years ago, but it was stolen along with other CDs. I too did not know what to make of this when I first heard it. I loved the first song. Gary does a great job vocally. This was a VERY strange time in VH's history. They had fired Sammy, could reconcile with Dave and Warner Bros. did not know what to do withe VH brothers. Enter Gary C. The CD is good on its own. Don't think of the typical VH LP, just enjoy the music as it comes. With an open mind and a sharp ear, you will appreciate its musical originality. Alot of VH fans did not buy this. I believe this is the only VH LP which did not go gold or platinum. However, if you are a true fan, love Eddie's guitar rifs, then you will want this CD to complete your collection. I ... What can we say about VH III. This album is not too bad, but it's not so good either
This album is odd. It has no comparison with any other Van Halen release. With David Lee Roth, Van Halen was a wild party band, with Sammy Hagar, they sounded more like arena rockers with some mature lyrics. With Cherone, there are some minor highlights, specially "Without you" sound very Van Halenish, and Once has a very unique sound, eventhough no one can tell that's Van Halen. Anyone familiar with Extreme's work might say "What happened to Gary's voice? " Instead of sounding like him, Gary tries to sound more like Sammy Hagar. Cherone is great with Extreme, but he is not for Van Halen. The chemistry fails in this record. This album doesn't work as a good introduction to Van Halen for those young ones who don't know about the band. Best of ... This album is odd. It has no comparison with any other Van Halen release. A great Van Halen release that should've got more attention with Gary Cherone on vocals.
I bought this on cassette when it first came out and just bought it on cd after all these years. I still to this day cannot understand why this release didn't get the attention or recognition it might much deserved in the year and years following. On the other there is some that wanted Roth or Hagar, me too. I can't deny as well. But Cherone was a great choice too and he fit like a glove on this Van Halen release rock solid. The riffs, drums, and bass lines was all there. I know I am rambling but people just need to buy this release or go back and listen to it again. It is that daggon good! I bought this on cassette when it first came out and just bought it on cd after all these years. One of the worst rock albums ever made. By anyone.
The arrogance of the Van Halen brothers created this godforsaken mess. They couldn't take Davld Lee Roth's ego or Sammy Hagar's occasional solo dalliances, so they brought in Gary Cherone, a Christian-rock half wit who has as much right fronting this once-great band as Pee Wee Herman does. This is, by far, the most dreadful record Van Halen has ever done; a classic " what were they thinking ? " project. The sound is as thin as Salvation Army soup. Cherone sounds like Sammy Hagar missing a testicle, and he writes lyrics than any 10 year old would be proud of. Most of these songs are tepid, lifeless exercises in drudgery. When the band does kick into gear, it doesn't last, and it sounds like they are afraid they might actually ROCK, so they make sure their ... While the VH boys realized their mistake a year in and sent Cherone packing, the fact remains that there have been a total of three mediocre new songs from the band in 13 years, and no one is getting any younger. It is comforting to know that Warner Brothers have finally deleted this nightmare from their catalog. I bought this used for a buck, and I was totally ripped off. Eddie is sober, David Lee seems solidly back at the helm and time's a waistin', laddies. The band needs to remove the vile taste of this hog slop record from fan's mouths while before they are all in motorized wheelchairs. It will take a HUGE record on par with the first VH record to remove that taste. One can only hope....
