The Title Graphic Is A Branding Iron
The best DVD cover art and lobby poster for this documentary are the branding iron which has just seared a rating into the back-side still smoking flesh of a naked body. Kirby Dick outs the Motion Picture Association of America as a fraud that financially discriminates against independent filmmakers by censoring sexual content especially about women, and favors the largest Hollywood studios by giving their male violent themed pro-military features a pass and thus wider distribution and exhibition. See whatever movies you like, but always buy your tickets for the independent features to help combat MPAA fraud. Secrets the MPAA doesn't want you to know!
Wonderful documentary film that tries to get to the bottom of how the MPAA movie ratings work and why they're so secretive about the process. Anyone who's a film buff should check this movie out; it's fascinating! My only beef with it is that it just kind of ends without really coming to any conclusions about what's wrong and how to fix it and there isn't really any closure to the narrative that runs through the film, which is understandable as the narrative is about director Kirby Dick's investigations and his subsequent submitting of the film TO the MPAA for rating. I was hoping there'd be more insight in the commentary or the special features but it didn't seem to be there. DVD extras include an entertaining commentary track and some excellent deleted scenes. Very thought provoking, Highly recommended!
This is an odd documentary. Why would this subject matter. I recommend you watch it and see why it does matter. Because there is alot more to movie ratings than I thought. Who decides what the people see? It seems there needs to be an alternative rating system that is more openly available. This touches on lots of different topics. There were a couple parts when I squirmed a little but that made me wonder why I found them distasteful. This is definitely a must see!This is an odd documentary. Why would this subject matter.
