Still being kept awake by a slinky, cabbage, & beef!
Remembering that these dvd sets were not released in chronological order, here we have SCTV's last season out 2nd. This last run on NBC, in an hour and a half format, is a hoot. This is sketch comedy in its hayday, with enough variety to appease all tastes. Being sketch comedy, there are, of course, hits and misses. The thing about SCTV is that the hits always outweigh the misses. SNLive, even in its early hayday, could never makes such a boast. Great White North, of course, is dispersed throughout each show. This humourous look into Canadian culture is worth the price of the discs itself. Comic freedom can be a funny thing, especially when ad-libbed by these two! They tackle such important issues as: economics, mice in beer, carpets, microwaves, and long underwear. Character ... Character assasinations include: a plodding Perry Como, a messy Tammy Faye, a smooth Merv Griffin, a crotchity Walter Cronkite and the easiest target of them all, Liberace. Here SCTV confronts: American ignorance, the Canadian identity-crisis, Communist Russia's arrogance, feminism, and political hypocrisy. No one, no target, is left untouched. Hill Street Blues and Diff'rent Strokes are also imitated delightfully here. Hilarious original skits include: Night School High-Q, Mrs. Falbo's Tiny Town, Sammy Maudlin, Money Talks, and Street Beef. The best special guest star on these dvd's is Rough Trade. And now for the beefs: the extras are boring (a photo shoot and award acceptances), and The Doorway to Hell, The Godfather, and the station Xmas party episodes are repetitiously plodding. And, no Martin Short at all. The worst guests, so horribly misplaced here, include: the vulgar Plasmatics, a skippy Al Jarreau, a warbling Natalie Cole, and a lost James Ingram. Each show has between 2 & 18 funny skits, with each show averaging over 20 skits per show total. That's a pretty good average. After watching these dvd's, I had reoccurring nightmares involving cabbage, a slinky, and beef!

It's dated by today's standards but the spoof's are spot on. It's total parody of the TV and film industry with the spolight on impersonations. Dave Thomas and Rick Moranis are briliant impersonators. It's also interesting to see how musical guests were intigrated into the show storyline instead of the "solo" presentation that SNL uses. The Wendy O'Williams and the Plamatics sketch is a scream! Since the PBS series American Masters highlighted Second City's stage and TV work and the fact that the early stage stars became the original core of SNL in 1975 speaks to the comedic genius of Second City. My wife who never heard of them before couldn't believe the future comedy stars involved in the show and when I bought the DVD's to show her she couldn't stop laughing. I love it but hope that ... This show was great when it first aired, and it hasn't lost anything over the years. Seller got it to me promptly, and in excellent condition.

SCTV - never equalled, never imitated - classic!!
While I find it sad that the commentary shows at the end of each disc display an older version of the hilarious actors in these discs, to see these brilliant people in their heyday is to watch them in their prime almost 30 years ago. By far, the first disc is the best with a Perry Como take-off that will start you laughing and the dead-on impersonation of fake Russian TV that is not far from the truth. No one ever did better than milking real TV shows than SCTV because imitating TV is never far from the truth. These discs capture this ensemble at their best and the extras expose how they did it. We love these guys and this second season shows the love they had for what they did and the camraderie and love they had for each other. No shows, not even SNL in its first few years (several ...
