Excellent Exotic Historical Drama set in Ancient Rome around the time of Julius Caesar and Augustus.
Excellent HBO drama. Realistic, dramatic, engaging. Good value. Recommended! The two core characters are a pair of Roman Legionaries. One embodies all the virtues expected of the ideal Roman Citizen and soldier. Brave. Incorruptible. Loyal. The other is brave, randy, and an opportunist, he's a survivor but honest and very loyal in his own way. The plot of the series follows the rise and fall of Julius Ceasar and the rise and rise of Augustus, Caesar's adopted son and heir. A cast of hundreds - all good - with many speaking roles and characters continuing for many episodes gives excellent continuity and realism to the series. Suspense a plenty. Some similarities to Game of Thrones and other HBO classic series. Whoever is in charge of organsing these drama series at HBO deserves an ... Excellent HBO drama. Realistic, dramatic, engaging. Think of Band of Brothers, Pacific, Game of Thrones and even Battlestar Gallactica, all excellent, all dramatic. In my view "Rome" is one of the best historical dramas ever about Ancient Rome. It covers the tumultuous transition from the Roman Republic to the Roman Empire and seems to be broadly historically accurate in terms of characters, costumes, sets and props, politics and events. Thoroughly recommended! 5 Stars

This is fantasic HBO
All the characters are exciting. This is not for the faint of heart. It's about two Roman soldiers caught up in the historical events in an era that included the death of republic and the birth of an empire. They encounter war, political twists, assassinations, family tragedies and more, while surrounded by historical figures such as Gaius Julius Caesar, Mark Antony, Gaius Octavian and Cleopatra

Okay series. Well acted, but a bit dull.
I found the various plots and twists hard to follow. Some of the main characters is fictionalized and lots of the scenes are complete conjecture. Worth a watch....once. I doubt that I will watch it again. At least it is inexpensive. On a side not....the actress who played Cleopatra is completely unbelievable. The actress seems to be a bit bored with the role, and the costumers and hair stylists/make-up artists make absolutely no effort to make her look believable as an Egyptian queen.I found the various plots and twists hard to follow. A wonderful trip to ancient Italy in the form of modern dvds.
Rome first season is a fabulous production with very good acting. This dvd set is first class like new. The story contains so much relevant historic information it makes you feel like you are there and experiencing it. Plus if you are into historic Italy of the time period you learn enough to satisfy. Caesar is presented on a personal level where you actually empathize with him and feel sympathy when he is assassinated by the group of Roman senators including Brutus. Young Octavian is realistic while Vorenus and Pullo (the main characters) are heroic and perfectly believable.
