Product Information

A fascinating, heartbreaking, and ultimately uplifting tale of self-discovery from the beloved actress who earned a permanent place in the hearts of millions when she was just a child. To fans of the hugely successful television series Little House on the Prairie, Melissa Gilbert grew up in a fantasy world with a larger-than-life father, friends and family she could count on, and plenty of animals to play with. Children across the country dreamed of the Ingalls' idyllic life--and so did Melissa. She was a natural on camera, but behind the scenes, life was more complicated. Adopted as a baby into a legendary show business family, Melissa wrestled with questions about her identity and struggled to maintain an image of perfection her mother created and enforced. Only after years of substance abuse, dysfunctional relationships, and made-for-television movies did she begin to figure out who she really was. With candor and humor, the cherished actress traces her complicated journey from buck-toothed Laura "Half-pint" Ingalls to Hollywood starlet, wife, and mother. She partied with the Brat Pack, dated heartthrobs like Rob Lowe and bad boys like Billy Idol, and began a self-destructive pattern of addiction and codependence. Left in debt after her first marriage, and struggling to create some sense of stability, she eventually realized that her career on television had earned her popularity, admiration, and love from everyone but herself. Through hard work, tenacity, sobriety, and the blessings of a solid marriage, Melissa has accepted her many different identities and learned to laugh, cry, and forgive in new ways. Women everywhere may have idolized her charming life on Little House on the Prairie, but Melissa's own unexpectedly honest, imperfect, and down-to-earth story is an inspiration.

  • Melissa's complaint

I bought this book because I wanted to know what all goes on in somebodies life that they need to write a book about it. Apparently a lot can go wrong if you are adopted and then catapulted into show business. But I have to say that she comes across a little bit like a whiner and putting herself down a lot by mentioning her "very round head" and such, things that are not really that important. She says herself that she was loved and even though her parents split up she still had a very good life. So why the book? She gives a lot of insight details but never really seems to understand that her life was better than some other peoples. She had not to worry about food or money, she was loved by her adopted parents, did not have to go through a lot of things than some other people. So ...

  • Things we don't need to know...

It is a well written book and interesting enough to read. I'm not sure it's necessary to give such details of one's life. Much like Valerie Bertinelli's book recently, we hear of all the men she slept with, drugs she took, drinking binges, or benders as she called them. Melissa is very much a drama queen. And of course, she blames it all on the fact that she was adopted at the ripe old age of ONE DAY OLD. Cheating, fighting, falling for every leading man, plastic surgery, drunken blackouts, etc. and so on, from yet another one of "America's Sweethearts". All the while her mother was teaching her what "good girls do". No morals from an actress who played on one of the most moralistic shows ever on television. She seems amazed that she got the ...

  • Review on Prairie Tale

I decided to buy this book because "Little House On The Prairie" firt came on television while I was growing up. I liked Melissa Gilbert's portrayal of Laura. This is an interesting book about Melissa's life story. I would've liked it much better if there hadn't have been bad language off & on throughout the book. Other than the language, I really enjoyed reading about Melissa's life.

  • It was an okay read

It was an okay read but she focused in on some areas and repeated things a lot and left out huge chunks of info-like she mentioned that she has only seen her brother twice since he was 18. What happened? He was also adopted----no mention of his struggles, family dynamics between them, etc. More of a superficial story and lots of mentions of Rob Lowe-but nothing deep. I loved Little House and liked her in other things and looked forward to reading the book. Had heard she had terrible migraines from stress of working on the set,etc.-she mentions headaches once-doesn't get into much of anything. I walked away not feeling like I knew her at all, which is not much of a memoir. Is an okay read-but I can save you money and sum it up with " I felt like a geek and couldn't believe cute guys ...

  • Praire Tale - An Excellent Read If You Are Fan

I purchased the book for a couple of reasons: One I wanted to get back into reading books again and two the most important I'm a Melissa Gilbert fan and still am after reading her book. I found the book to be a very interesting read. Some things in the book while they didn't shock me but I must say I was surprised as I never new about her drug and alcohol abuse and how she didn't like Melissa Sue Anderson. Also that she has only seen her brother Jonathan 2 to 3 times in the past 20 years as I've always wondered what happen to him. While some may label her as a "drama queen" which she admits in the book there was a lot of "drama", I just feel that she was being very open and honest about herself and that she is far from perfect and not like ...
