Astronaut Leo Davidson (Mark Wahlberg) is part of a space station crew that, in the year 2029, is conducting experiments in training genetically engineered chimps to perform complex away missions. When Leo's chimp disappears into a worm hole, Leo unadvisedly goes after him, ending up in a parallel world in which the monkeys are the keepers and humans are traded and caged like animals. It's a horrifying place, and the whole atmosphere, colored by Burton's direction and Rick Baker's incredible special effects makeup, is charged with terror. Leo becomes a heroic figure in the eyes of his defeated human brethren, and he puts his trust--and his hope for escape--in Ari (Helena Bonham Carter), a forward-thinking ape who believes in human rights. But Leo has formidable opponents in Thade (Tim Roth) and Attar (Michael Clark Duncan), two power-hungry, testosterone-charged apes who wish to rid the planet of humans altogether. This excellent rendition of PLANET OF THE APES is more than just a remake: it includes intense physicality on the part of the actors, complex mythology lacing the story, chilling philosophical realizations, and an amazing cameo by original APES star Charlton Heston. The combination of those complex parts makes for a riveting viewing experience.

Re-make does not disappoint
Considering that you really can't make something that's perfect any better, this "Planet of the Apes" remake, does a good job of trying. It is able to carry the basic premis of the movie even with the addition of computer graphics and state-of-the-art make-up. You can never replace the stars from the original, but somehow these new actors are able to pull it off as though the roles were meant for only them. If you are able to set aside your need to compare every detail to the original you'll enjoy the movie for what its worth; A drama that cleverly disguises the maltreatmnet of humans by Apes as an alternate view for teaching lessons in prejudice and racism. Remake-mistakes
After seeing Tim Burton's excellent Sleepy Hollow, and superlative Ed Wood, I was expecting much more of a character driven movie, with the characterization and spiritual philosopies that elevated the original movie out of the pure science fiction genre and into a cerebral adventure film with acutely observed social comments. Unfortunately, the film suffers from poor script and direction right from the minute the astronaut crashlands. They knew from the outset that they would never produce an ending to rival the original, and any cinema-goer in their right minds would never expect one. But they could have at least got the beginning right. Neither Mark Wahlberg's character nor the tension is ever developed, so when he is confronted by the apes: we feel nothing. The humans, though they ... The make-up and effects are, as you would expect, fantastic. However, despite improved flexibility in the make-up, there is little warmth in either the performances or direction that made millions of kids go ape-nuts in the seventies. Bonham-Carter's Ari, whilst convincing, is not a patch on Kim Hunter's Zira. Roth's quite brilliant performance as Thade virtually carries this film and makes it the one reason to stick with it to the end. Did I say end? Well, the less said about that the better.

Great remake series.
The first movie of this series remake. Had excellent actors especially Mark Walberg and was action packed. Enjoyed the film.

not the original but still very watchable. had seen this several years ago, but is well worth a rewatch. glad to have purchased this item.

A "must see"
How this movie could get anything less than a spectacular review is mystifying to me. The sets alone are worth owning this movie. The music is compelling. The storyline is unique. The character development is well rounded. Tim Roth portrays General Thade who is as evil as anyone should never be. The interspecies chemistry between Leo and Ari is touching and bittersweet. Mark Wahlberg's method of "less is more" really worked in movie. I found Helena Bonham Carter's portrayal of Ari to be superb. This movie has something for everyone. State of the art sets and make-up, costume designs of perfection, intriguing plot, and twists and turns that keep you on the edge of your seat.
