Should be required reading for all high school/college students.
I was aware of some of the information in this book before i read it, but it contained much more than i knew. The shenanigans of Turner, at withholding intelligence from Pearl Harbor, and thereby setting the stage for WW2, plus the later "cover up" by basically the entire U.S. Navy upper command, to conceal their duplicity and guilt, has been known in some circles - but NOT widely publicised as it should be. The shameful treatment of Rochefort - the guy that GAVE them the Coral Sea victory through breaking the Jap cypher system was known, but again has not been adequately publicised. The lack of accountability and any punishment at all - for actions that should at least have warranted courtmartial and dismissal from the service is inexcusable. Only in the actions of 1946-47 in Japan - ... I was aware of some of the information in this book before i read it, but it contained much more than i knew. The actions of the current prime minister of Japan - in visiting the Yasukuni shrine, where at least 1068 convicted war criminals are "enshrined" to be worshiped by the population as gods. Today, schoolbooks in Japan teach elementary school students that Japan was NOT responsible for WW2, but was "forced into it" by the western powers. Our navy leaders are just as guilty of starting the war. Excellent book - undoubtedly written with some bias, but much of the information i know to be true. Much of the rest is plausible, given what research and reading i've done on the subject. Cheers.

Great book that gives the in depth findings of what really happened at Pearl Harbot and Midway.. Layton was able to tell the complete story in 1985, which he was precluded from doing prior and totally destroys the the credibility of "At Dawn We Slept" The author of AT Dawn.. was on McArthur's staff and tried to keep the authors of "And I Was There from getting info from the Japanese archives which were under the control of McArthur. Layton died before the book was completed, but got everything of importance into it before he expired. R. T. Shigley, Col. An excellent behind the scenes look at what really happened
A meticulous record of the breakdown of communication and the in-fighting between top brass at the time as well with those in DC. An excellent read for fans of WWII history or of the Naval service background.

And I Was There
This is a nonfiction book written about the author's experiences while he was at Pearl Harbor when it was attacked. It was a gift to my grandson who is very interested in anything that has to do about World War 11. He was delighted to receive it and even more delighted to learn it was a first edition.
