BASED on a true story The Scarlet Pimpernel of the Vatican. All over Nazi Occupied Rome British and American flyers are trying to get out of occupied areas of italy and to the allied lines. They hear a story in Rome there is some one in the Vatican can help them escape~ah~ there is a Priest. Gregory Peck is an irish cardinal who uses both his wits and italian resistance contacts to help hundred yes hundreds of people escape occupied italy. he also has a gift for disguise. In disguise as street cleaner, postal delivery person, and even a nazi we see this clever fellow sneaking in an around rome. Peck is good at the Cardinal but the BEST is the Nazi...(Christopher Plummer the The Sound of Music) as the ruthless Nazi in charge of occupied Rome and who has no morals or scruples in his quest ... Inexplicably wonderful!
A great story about an Irish priest serving in rhe Vatican (based on a true story) during World War 2 who rescues Jews, Allied soldiers, and anyone else whose life is threatened by the Nazi's command. Eventually, he's even asked to risk stealing the Nazi commander's family out of Rome and how he doesn't agree to do it, but relents! (He'd had 2 of his friends killed by this commander.)

Great WWII True Story, Gregory Peck is Outstanding
Set in beautiful Rome, Mr. Peck is engaging as a high ranking official at the Vatican. Christopher Plummer is the head of the Gestapo in Rome. Amazing story on how thousands of allied prisoners were hidden and protected under the nose of the Nazis. Highly recommended.

The leader of the operation is a Vatican priest (Gregory Peck). The Pope (John Gielgud) is aware of his activities but struggles to maintain the Vatican's neutralily. The suspense mounts as Peck's activites challenge the head of the Gestapo in Rome (Christopher Plummer) who orders Peck's capture or death if he is seen outside the Vatican. One memorable scene has Peck moving just inside the border between the Vatican and Rome with the Nazis waiting. Scarlet and the Black
One of the best movies we have watched. You don’t get any better acting than Gregory Peck and Christopher Plummer. Especially when it was connected to a true story. The chances taken to save Jewish lives from the Germans were heart stopping. Recommend repeat watching!
