The prison planet of RAULF isn't just any normal prison-planet; no, this particular prison-planet has been created to hold the vilest scum in the universe, serial-killers and mass murderers of an impeccable breed. It is run by a creature almost as vile as the inmates, a gigantic warden who's known only as Fat Ugly Boy. Rather than making sure they keep put, F.A.B. has made it possible for them to escape, provided they're bloodthirsty enough. It seems F.A.B. has created a device that is capable of bending time and space, and he wants to use it to control the universe. But first, he wants the worst of the galaxy to give him a challenge, to see if he's really up to the task. Loaded, the multi-platform top-down shooter from Interplay, has made its way to the Sega Saturn, and has brought with it the game's trademark violence and mayhem. In Loaded, one or two players will take on the role of one of six deranged psychotics: Butch, the cross-dressing killer; Vox, a bombshell whose voice is deadly; Mama, a grown-up who loves diapers, his teddy bear, and ripping victims limb from limb; and three other figures who wouldn't qualify as having outstanding moral character. Needless to say, Loaded is not a game created for the weak of heart. Or of stomach, for that matter. Loaded's engine runs on polygons, but it plays as a top-down fixed camera shooting game, although you can zoom the camera in and out. Players will choose from the six characters, each possessing their own stats in both speed and damage ability, and then hit the long, dark hallways of RAULF, moving through the labyrinth of hallways, rooms, and corridors. The point of the game is simple; to blast anything and everything that moves to tiny, little pieces. Loaded is rated as a mature title, and the game certainly lives up to that status. The fast-paced combat is blood-drenched and gory, as is the scenery of the game's 15 levels. The motif is what you would expect from the story: prison cells, rubber rooms, and general dingy, dirty, and bloody props and areas make up the areas of play.

Not Much Else Than Blood and More Blood
Loaded lets get to play as one of six available characters who are trying to escape a massive security complex after being wrongly imprisoned. The whole idea of the game is to make your away across 15 levels obliterating anything which gets in your way. The actual game play could easily be compared with the arcade game Gauntlet. The game is a top down shooter, but there is no strategy involved at all -this is an all out blaster with you simply having to kill the enemies before they kill you. Each of the six characters have different statistics and weaponry. Some characters are faster than others but have weaker armour, etc. Every character has a basic rapid firing weapon, along with a smart bomb style attack you have a limited supply of which destroys all enemies on the screen. Whilst there are 15 levels, they are all very similar to one another. The aim is too simply escape from each one, and to do that you have to find various coloured keys which unlock doors. It can take quite a while to find every key needed and it soon starts getting annoying searching around the levels in the same places over and over again for a key and not being able to find it. Another flaw has to be the fact that you cannot display your map and your stats (ammo and health levels etc) at the same time. It may not sound like much reading it here, but whilst playing it will soon come to your attention. In some levels you really need both your map and stats screen on, but you cannot -you have to press a button on hte pad to keep switching them. Each level is full of enemies, most of which are cannon fodder just waiting to be killed. The human enemies are the most tolerable, but the animal enemies are very poorly implemented, and ones such as rats will just continuously make cheap attacks on you and are hard to kill. All of the enemies have various attacks, from punches to shooting at you with laser blasts. Loaded's main feature is how bloody it is. Shoot an enemy and blood will splatter everywhere, so you can imagine what happens when you shoot a large group of enemies. Blood probably is the main feature of the game and so much of it was put in just to attract fans of Mortal Kombat, but it didn't work for me and could have been toned down a bit. Loaded's graphics are all 2D, and not very good 2D at that. Whilst the game engine can usually perfectly deal with lots of sprites on screen and lots of hectic action, everything looks rough, with some unspectacular special effects (the explosions, for example, aren't very good) and the character and enemy sprites lack animation. When playing Loaded in the one player mode it gets boring all too quickly, but thankfully the 2 player co-op mode is slightly better. Whilst it will get tedious fairly quickly, it's more fun due to there being much more carnage. However, the whole key finding boredom will quickly stop you from playing as it gets tiresome spending hours trying to find certain keys. Loaded is worth buying if you want a no-brainer shooter, but the main game play elements leave a lot to be desired. As stated, the 2 player option makes it slightly better, but don't expect to be playing it that much even then.

You take on the role as one of the selectable characters, and commence running through the stages killing as many people and enemies as you can. The graphics wowed me at the time of its release, but even with technology moving as it has, it still looks decent while playing. The violence represented in the game might be too much for younger gamers, but any older gamer should have plenty of fun playing it. The title is based somewhat on the smash tv kind of play scheme. But instead of levels on tv stages, you are blasting your way through level after level. This is one of the first 32-bit videogames I played back in the day when it was new and I loved its simple controls, and fast paced gameplay. While definitely not ... Loaded for the Sega Saturn is a top-down action/shooter game.
