Grace Kelly Steals the Movie
Excellent script, outstanding performances by the cast, a great old movie superior to anything being put out today. Grace Kelly, in her well deserved Academy Award winning role, steals the heart of the viewers from veteran stars Bing Crosby and William Holden. I'm not a big Bing Crosby fan, but he does an amazing job in the portrayal of his character. And the ending, is so right.

Nominated for 7 Academy Awards including Best Picture, this 1954 movie takes you into the heat of preparation for a Broadway play's opening. Frank Elgin (Bing Crosby) is the star of the play--sort of a man forced into it because there is no one else at the time who can both act and sing. His main backer is the director of the play, Bernie Dodd (William Holden); his main critic is the producer of the play, Phil Cook (Anthony Ross). The main problem: Frank is a recovering alcoholic, still grieving over the death of his son which his negligence caused. So why is the name of this movie "The Country Girl"? Grace Kelly, in a role where her tremendous beauty and elegance lay hidden for a long time, plays Georgie Elgin, the wife who Frank claims is the source of his problems. And Bernie ... Nominated for 7 Academy Awards including Best Picture, this 1954 movie takes you into the heat of preparation for a Broadway play's opening. As the movie moves along, you will be sitting on the edge of your seat trying to figure out where the plot will lead. Will Frank make a success of the play? Will we find out who is really the problem here? Is Georgie really punishing Frank for the death of their son? Will Bernie also figure it out? In due time, we get all the answers and more. There are a lot of reasons why this little movie was nominated for so many Academy Awards, beginning with the two winning Oscars that this movie received: Best Actress (Grace Kelly) and Best Screenplay (William Perlberg and George Seaton). Bing Crosby also proves his nomination for Best Actor by both handling greatly the weak role he is dealt as well as the recovery that he goes through. And let's not forget the superb overlooked performance of William Holden as the man's man, Bernie Dodd. Other nominations were for Best Director (George Seaton), Best Black and White Cinematography, and Best Interior Decoration. The plot also gives us some twists and turns and will not resolve itself until its conclusion. This movie, unfortunately, was overshadowed by "On the Waterfront" in 1954. But now, it is a true classic that I know that you will want as a part of your DVD library. And did I mention that there are several songs performed in the movie, lyrics by Ira Gershwin and music by Harold Arlen?

"LIGHTWEIGHT WITH GREAT FEATURES"
IT HAS A GREAT ENDING. SHE STATES IN THIS MOVIE THAT ALL SHE WANTS IS FOR FRANK ELGIN TO BE ABLE TO STAND ON HIS OWN TWO FEET AGAIN AND HE DOES! IT'S NOT THE USUAL GLAMOROUS ROLE THAT GRACE KELLY USUALLY PLAYS.....REFRESHING!

I decided to buy this DVD because I am a big fan of the older hollywood movies. I've always admired Grace Kelly and I knew that she had won the oscar for this role so I wanted to see for myself her acting. She was phenominal. I was always so used to seeing Grace Kelly all dressed up in glamours evening gowns and beautiful makeup and hair. In The Country Girl, she is the total opposite of glamourous. The storyline is excellent and the main characters, Grace Kelly, William Holden and Bing Crosby are all fantastic. I would highly recommend this movie, it's definitely a keeper!!!I decided to buy this DVD because I am a big fan of the older hollywood movies. Grace Kelly is usually regarded as beautiful, and Bing Crosby as an excellent singer. but they are rarely numbered among the greatest actors of all time. This film is the exception. Both are cast against type. Kelly isn't glamorous and Crosby isn't likable. He's a weak, manipulative, alcoholic has-been actor. She's his stressed-out wife who comes across as grim and demanding. Their child died after being hit by a car. Frank (Crosby) feels responsible and, over the years, has reacted by avoiding all types of responsibility. Now that he has a chance for a Broadway comeback, will his wife push him to success, or push him over the edge?
