Drama in real life
As this film ended, I was literally in tears. The 1994 genocide in Rwanda was truly horrific, and the film depicts it realistically. At the same time, it does an excellent job of making the point that even well-intentioned people had to make difficult choices. If, in a life-or-death situation, you could save only the white people, or let everyone die, is it racist to save the white people, or simply common sense? If you could escape or stay behind, and everyone who stayed behind would die regardless of whether you were there or not, what would you do? I highly recommend this film, especially for church groups, history classes, and psychology and sociology majors.As this film ended, I was literally in tears. Like 'Hotel Rwanda', 'Beyond the Gates' is based on a real incident and hopes to use that incident as a prism through which to view the 1994 genocide in which Hutu Militias murdered hundreds of thousands of Tutsis and moderate Hutus while the world sat back and did nothing. And like 'Hotel Rwanda', this depressing drama can only really scratch the surface of a tragedy that remains unfathomable both for its savagery and for the sheer indifference of the outside world. When the violence broke out following the Assassination of Rwanda's ruler, 2,500 people sought shelter at Kigala's Ecole Technique Officielle, seeking safety on the school grounds, which also served as a base for a contingent of Belgian UN Peacekeepers. But the soldiers were under strict orders not to engage the Militias, so ... Like 'Hotel Rwanda', 'Beyond the Gates' is based on a real incident and hopes to use that incident as a prism through which to view the 1994 genocide in which Hutu Militias murdered hundreds of thousands of Tutsis and moderate Hutus while the world sat back and did nothing. Director Michael Caton-Jones shoots on the grounds of the actual school and with massacre survivors peppered among the extras and crew, so there is a certain amount verisimilitude to the many scenes of nervous refugees milling about, trapped behind the gates of the school and watching uneasily the machete-armed men just beyond who are just waiting for the peacekeepers to flee. Surrounding the truth is a fictional story of a Catholic Priest (based on a Real Priest who ministered in Rwanda), Father Christopher (John Hurt); a young teacher, Joe (Hugh Dancy), who has come to teach for a year; and Marie ('Children of Men's' Claire-Hope Ashitey), a student with a crush on Joe. The film opens on an idyllic note, just another school day, and while there are portents of things to come — ominous talk of a census that identifies the Tutsis and where they live — surely it is nothing serious. When President Habyarimana's Plane is shot down, signaling an apparent coup, the killing starts and the refugees pour in, and it's all that can be done to try to spur the UN Soldiers into action. For Father Christopher, it becomes a crisis of faith, while Joe wrestles with trying to do the right thing when every fiber of his being is telling him to run. What happened to the people at ETO is horrible; and it's made more so by the world's apathy and the UN's inaction. The story the film tells is moving and powerful. It cannot be anything else. Caton-Jones, screenwriter David Wollstencroft, and writers Richard Alwyn and David Belton, who came up with the story, present this film. Hurt is terrific as a good man in spiritual turmoil who nevertheless sticks to his vocation, doing Christ's work even if he feels utterly abandoned. Dancy is also excellent as a callow young man forced into maturity overnight. The story is and should properly be about this tragedy. So as the drama reaches its horrific and heartrending climax, there is the feeling of a story only half told and utterly heartwrenching to the core. See This True Story....

Good title
I got the movie because it was based on a true story with people that were actually there and survived. I was curious about the UN and as I thought, they abandoned the Rwandan people who weren't Hutus. They were unmercifully slaughtered by machete, 100 days 600,000 people. The U.S. pays the UN millions if not billions of dollars every year for what ? They are useless and we should not fund them with our taxes period.I got the movie because it was based on a true story with people that were actually there and survived.
