A Must !!!! -- To Complete Lecter !!!! Well Done !!!!
"Hannibal Rising" is the Prequel to the wildly derived success' of "Manhunter" & Remake "Red Dragon" (Dragon with Anthony Hopkins). Then, of course, falls "Silence of the Lambs" and "Hannibal" as we follow through the perverse classic of Hanibal "The Cannibal". Thomas Harris, the author who created Hannibal Lecter, wrote both the novel on which Hannibal Rising is based and the screenplay for the film adaptation. In this well-done prequel, more suavely violent than perverse, we will learn Lecter's fundamental basis and childhood. His rise through EVIL., to become the "Hannibal" we will then watch in "Red Dragon". We see that Lecter did not begin life as a psychotic cannibalistic sadist, but ... Witnessing the destruction of humanity, particularly his own, and when he meets his widowed Japanese Aunt, Lady Murasaki (Gong Li), Lecter stumbles upon her shrine to a Samurai Ancestor. Here, he discovers the means to an end. By this reckoning, Lecter learns the EVIL adjustment that renders his beginnings acting out., while simultaneously developing a refined gourmand's palate that happens to include a taste for human flesh. In counterbalance, the film offers up the character of Inspector Popil (Dominic West), a Paris detective who specializes in War Crimes. He has similarly lost his family during the War, as has Lecter at this point, (a point-driven-hard by film's directors). Popil lectures Hannibal on letting justice take its course. Yet Popil realizes in brief time., that he will need to bring Lecter to justice. Out of control, Lester and Popil will begin the first cat-and-mouse liason that has driven the Hannibal Trilogy to date. Intelligence mixed with insanity introduces Lecter's world; and his victims are shown as monstrous as he. The taste for Fava Beans and Chianti with his liver., is born. "Hannibal Rising" works at all levels as a thriller; a whole multitude of sins. The film has a great feel for pacing, and doles out the violence is simply heavy-handed, gratuitous nature. Lecter is far from subtle; as he ladles on the carnage. Director's let the cameras linger over Lecter's gruesome handiwork, the sound effects department working overtime to capture each unsettling sound of impending doom. The scenes are slowly drawn for review, packed with suspense and wrought with tension. While the "Hannibal" Trilogy has a slight upperhand., as the adult "Hannibal" clearly learned more as he aged to maturity, amidst his newfound perversions., "Hannibal Rising" is the PERFECT derivitive in granting us the birth and foundation of youth gone drastically awry. A must-see, must-have for "Hannibal" fans everywhere. It is incapable of failing viewers. SEE THIS !!!!

Hannibal Rising (DVD, 2007)
Excellent film that surplants itself as the beginning of the "Hannibal the Cannibal" series. It begins in 1944 with the Nazi occupation and subsequent conquest of Lithuania. Hannibal was just a mere boy of 8-10 years who along with his sister Misha who was only 4-5 years old, survived the initial German attack. As Russian/Soviet forces advanced, the two children fell into the hands of mercenary forces and were brutalized. In the confusion and mayhem of the times everybody was starving, and the group of five mercenaries killed and ate Misha's body for food. As the Russians overran the area, Hannibal was saved, but as the movie progressed to around 1953, we find a "mute" teenager living in an orphanage inside his family's former castle. The orphanage is Soviet ... Excellent film that surplants itself as the beginning of the "Hannibal the Cannibal" series. The orphanage is Soviet style, brutal, and run by bullies. Hannibal makes his escape to the West, across the European frontier, and to his aunt living in France. She is of Japanese heritage, having lost all of her family too with the bombing of Hiroshima in 1945. Soon after arriving in France, Hannibal begins to once again speak. He is strangely aloof and withdrawn. His mind has truly been broken by the incidents of the last ten years. He trains with her in the Samurai tradition and becomes proficient with bladed weapons. He has nightmares constantly and dreams of killing those who killed Misha. When a former French traitor insults his aunt, Lady Moriachi, Hannibal beheads him. Police investigate, but are unable to prove that he did it, and he is released. Jumping ahead a couple of years, Hannibal is now a medical student and in a twist of fate, through the use of a drug is able to remember the past and goes on a trip back to Lithuania and the place where Misha was killed. Here he retrieves a bag containing the ID tags of the men he is hunting. Throughout the rest of the movie Hannibal becomes more and more twisted as he tracks down these Frenchmen and one by one kills them. This sets the tone for the future of the brilliant but tragically twisted Dr. Hannibal Lector. This was a very entertaining film, and added continuity to the rest of the series.

Disappointment
I saw this in theatres before it came out on DVD and I bought the DVD partly out of pity and partly to complete the collection of Hannibal movies I own. There was much criticism about the movie "Hannibal" due to Clarice being portrayed by an actress other than Jodie Foster, but the plot was to die for: It was so thick, you could hack it with a cleaver (Sorry for the correlation). But it seems after that, DeLaurentiis got a little obsessed with the whole Hannibal Lector thing, going back and remaking "Manhunter" with Sir Anthony Hopkins playing Hannibal, Edward Norton performing horribly as the new Will Graham and Ralph Fiennes sadly misplaced as Dolarhyde (However, Philip Seymour Hoffman made a great Freddie Lounds). Even though that version was truer to the book than ... But the next disaster was this film, and I regret saying that because it just feels...rushed, thin and not thought through. The plot seems about as thick as California ice, and the novelty of the missing Young Hannibal years finally being answered for is the only validation for purchasing this DVD. If that's not enough, although the young man they cast as the young Hannibal was convincingly good, they would've been far, far better off using Gordon Currie, an actor who played the Antichrist/Nikolae Carpathia in "Left Behind", another example of a horrible film with a monumental bad guy. If you've seen Currie play Carpathia, you understand right off the bat how his coolness, culture and other persona points scream for the role of Young Hannibal. But done is done, and in this stage of "what-if", all we can do is mourn.

Gory Edge Of Your Seat
Very gory actually..Hannibal Rising follows the beginning of Hannibals mental problems..as he watches his Parents butchered by SS Nazis during WW2, then his little Sister eaten by those same animals he swears revenge to his dead Sister..he manages to escape and taken to a Orphanage after being terrorized by an older boy who he exacts revenge on, he again escapes and he's taken in by family and raised..even though she knows she is helping a monster his Aunt by marriage caters to him. One cannot help feeling for Hannibal as did my Partner and our best friend we found ourselves agreeing with his revenge vow, however the canabalism part we could have done without..do not watch this film until after you have eaten!! I was a little disappointed with the perosn chosen to play Hannibal as a ... "Hannibal Rising" is a perfect name for this film.
Now I own all 4 of the Hannibal movies and while without a doubt they are all scary. BUT.. the scariest of all is Hannibal Rising. I'm 84 but when I was in my early teens I saw Phantom of the Opera and hid my eyes when the phantom was unmasked. I almost hid my eyes at the beginning this movie when they took Hannibal's sister away and also in Hannibal's subsequent dreams (nightmares). SCARY !!!!
