Product Information

Delbert Mann's moody adaptation of the Eugene O'Neill tragedy DESIRE UNDER THE ELMS stars Sophia Loren in her American film debut. Ephraim Cabot (Burl Ives), the larger-than-life patriarch of a New England farm in 1840, has had three sons, now grown, by two different wives, both dead. He's bought out the shares in the farm of two of his sons, but a third, Eben (Anthony Perkins), stays on, believing he has a right to the land, which his mother had previously owned. The old man decides he wants another son, and makes a deal with Anna (Loren), a 20-year-old woman, to marry him in exchange for the deed to the land in his will. But perhaps inevitably, Loren finds herself attracted to young Eben, and when she becomes pregnant, Ephraim has had nothing to do with it. After the baby is born, the unwitting old farmer makes public his bargain with Anna; and as Eben, shocked and enraged, flees the farm, the young woman's response leads to tragedy for all. Perkins delivers a typically nuanced performance in this epic family saga that features a sweeping score by Elmer Bernstein and garnered an Oscar nomination for Best Cinematography.

unique love triangle
I have always wanted to own this movie ever since I saw it on TV years ago. As far as I can recall, it has not run on any network ever since I last saw it years ago. The love triangle in this movie, between father, wife and son, is one of a kind. Of course it was quite inevitable for the pretty young wife of the dreary old man to fall for his dashing, tall, dark and handsome son. This is a well done movie and all players are very good: Burl Ives, Anthony Perkins, and the incomperable Sophia Loren. Even though most of the movie revolves around those three characters, one doesn't get bored at all as would be otherwise expected. I like everything about this movie, in fact, I can't think of anything that I could dislike about it. I certainly do recommend it to all those who are ... Desire Under the Elms (2004,DVD)
I bought the item because I wanted to see this movie. The stars in the movie are good and I saw about the first 45 minutes of the film. Other things came up that I had to do and did not finish the movie. I will in the future. I enjoyed seeing Pernell Roberts acting like a yahoo and not acting like his Adam Cartwright character. Adam Cartwright is a serious character and the yahoo (hillbilly) portrayed in Desire Under the Elms was not. This was interesting.I bought the item because I wanted to see this movie. The stars in the movie are good and I saw about the first 45 minutes of the film. Other things came up that I had to do and did not finish the movie. I will in the future.
