Actress Emma Thompson both wrote and stars in this adaptation of Jane Austen's SENSE AND SENSIBILITY--a novel that perceptively examines the social manners and laws of early-19th-century Britain. Set in the English countryside, the film follows the loves and heartaches of sisters Elinor (Thompson) and Marianne Dashwood (Kate Winslet). The two have extremely divergent approaches to life: Elinor represents "sense" and believes in behaving with propriety and thoughtfulness, while Marianne represents "sensibility" and basks in her own emotions. Both women, however, experience confusion when their lovers, seemingly on the verge of proposing marriage, spurn them. For director Ang Lee, the film marks a break from his Father Knows Best trilogy, which examined the problems of the contemporary Taiwanese family. Many people questioned whether an Asian director could handle an English period film. Lee answered those questions with a gorgeous film that both captures the nuances of Austen's novel and proves that Lee is a first-rate director capable of tackling any material. Featuring Hugh Grant and Alan Rickman, among others, the stellar cast inspired Lee to flatteringly exclaim, "Can everyone in England act?"

    Emma is our dearest!

    Sense and sensibility is about character. Its about those that are evil wicked and cruel despite the seeming graces and superficial charms of civility, and it is about goodness and idealism and beauty for which there is no equal on earth. In this respect Emma Thompson saves the day not only in respect of this movie but rather as a shining beacon on this earth for those that wish to be the best we can as good souls, true christianly spirits in our terrestrial walk on this good earth bestowed by the good lord for those of his own. The balance between the desire for being sensible as it were while giving positive vent to healthy emotions and doing so in a way that keeps you sane good decent and certainly wise is in fact the ultimate study of the movie.     sense and sensibility

    I absolutely ADORE this movie!!! GIRLS, u can usually rely on 2 things. Your FAMILY,and that MOST men were scum suckers, even hundreds of years ago!!! This is a very romantic piece, and Kate Winslet,is wonderful as the fun loving Marianne.Emma Thompson,is equally fantastic as spinster sister,Elinor Dashwood. Wonderful set decoration,as well as scenic location, make this a pleasure for your eyes as well!.Hugh Grant,and of course,from Harry Potter fame, Alan Rickman, who plays the wonderful colonel Brandon,are a fabulous addition.

    Austen Would Be Pleased!

    Emma Thompson is astounding--as screenplay adapter and actress--in this very fine cast that also features Hugh Grant, Alan Richman and a young Kate Winslet. Ang Lee's stellar direction captures the dry humor and emotionally wrenching moments in one of Austen's finest works. A great buy, rightfully nominated for Oscars.

    Jane Austen's best next to Pride and Prejudice

    Emma Thompson is the producer of this Sense and Sensibility with Kate Winslet and Hugh Grant. I thought the acting was superb in this production and I never tire of watching it. There are scenes that require gut-wrenching sobbing and they really pull it off realistically. The story line is not too predictable and in the usual Jane Austen style has some unexpected twists and turns-pretty riveting. I got it because I wanted to own it after borrowing a copy.

    Sense, Sensibility, and Style!

    Ang Lee directs Kate Winslett, Emma Thompson, and Hugh Grant as they combine their classic British acting styles to deliver a whopping 7 Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture and Best Screenplay--and a Golden Globe for Best Picture! This is a very high quality film and solidified Ang Lee's place among the world's best film makers.
