Born into a life of poverty, Oliver (William Miller) and his unwed mother struggle to survive. Received this excellent dvd promptly, in like new condition as advertised and well packaged for shipping. I appreciated the bubble wrap insert inside the case to keep the disc secure during shipping. I don’t usually buy from stock photos as I like to see the exact item I’m buying but took a chance this time and am very happy with this addition to my Charles Dickens collection. Outstanding Adaptation!
I have watched several adaptations of this movie including David Lean & Roman Polanski's. The charcter development here was superb. In the other versions so much is skimmed over. Here I truly felt Nancy's love 4 Oliver & how he represented the child she never had. My heart ached 4 her. I felt that Bill Sykes wasn't born. He was made. I felt how Fagin tragically exemplified how poorly Jews were treated. Yes, we all have a choice about who we choose to be. However, in that era, the cruel poverty, the vile treatment of children & the poor. Who's to say that I wouldn't have ended up being 1 of these tragic creatures. Sykes' demise was different than the book or other adaptations but it exemplified his treagedy and his humanity. Thus, near the end of this Series, I was ovecome with ... I rejoiced at Mr. Monk's unveiling & comeuppance. Felt sorry for Mr. Bumble in choosing to marry who he did. Man, i was 1 big blob of emotions. Lol. I Loved the amplification of each character in this version. Also, Oliver is a bit less timid than in other adaptations but it worked here. A delightul cinematic experience. Artistic liberties were taken but I still highly recommed this version for a richer Oliver Twist & Dickensian experience!!

Needless reworking but watchable
This BBC version, stretched out a bit to make it a mini-series, took quite a few unwarranted liberties with the work. The addition of characters and character behavior was distasteful. Why the writer thought this needed is beyond me. Changing the chief "Bleeding heart" from Mr Brownlow to his "niece" Rose was off-putting. and the "bringing to the screen" of Edward Monks was understandable but distracting. Nancy and Bill are played very very well by the girl and Tom Hardy, the two of them save this adaptation fro complete ruin. Oliver doesn't seem as vulnerable in this adaptation as others. It's certainly watchable, but can be off-putting if you are use to a better version. The best being the Roman Polanski version from 2005, which does everything right. You certainly should pick up that version, it's shorter of course, being a movie as opposed to a mini series, but it's just about perfect. so be sure check for it, if I could have Tom Hardy playing Bill in that one it would have been complete magic, even more than it is. This version is watchable however, and certainly worth having, but as it stands, the Polanski version remains the best version made to date. Mostly due to the alterations to many of the characters ties and behavior. It's just not a true adaptation but a "Reworking". And Oliver Twist needs no reworking.

Loved it.
A very good classic movie. I had to watch it all the way to the end. It has twist and turns all the way to the end. I loved it!!

Great take on an old classic. Probably my favorite version of an awesome story.

The Best Actor EVER!!!
Tom Hardy's depiction of Bill Sykes was absolutely the best!!! Then, again, everything Hardy does is the best.
