Product Information

When the Americans test a nuclear weapon at the South Pole at the exact moment that the Soviets are testing their own weapon at the North, the earth's axis is jolted out of alignment, causing catastrophic changes in global weather patterns. Additionally, the earth has been dislodged from its orbit, and is now hurtling towards the sun. It's a race against time as the world prepares for additional nuclear detonations which could restore life as we know it. This classic piece of British science fiction won a British Academy Award for Best Screenplay and has been completely restored by Anchor Bay, including tinted sequences not seen since the movie's original theatrical release in 1961.

    The Day the Earth Caught Fire 1961-2015

    I first saw this movie when it first came out. I was in 6th grade & the Cold War was a terrifying fact of life The movie scared me then & has lost very little of its effect 50+ years later. Be it the idea, the set design, the characters, the ever sharp stiff upper lip witty Noel Cowardian dialogue and the ending it is still at full power. The science maybe totally out of whack but the new way more sophisticated audience can think that the threat is global warming.

    Absorbing, Outstanding English Drama with a Terrible Commercial Title.

    Despite the lurid commercial title, this film is a riveting winner from the first frame to the last. People in London deal with drought, unbearable hot temperatures and the possibility that the end of the world really is at hand when two simultaneous nuclear tests shift the earth very slightly in its orbit. While this film moves at a slower and more deliberately measured pace for suspense compared to films made today, this production is nothing less than brilliant in its absorbing, slightly documentary-style of film-making. The power of this film is sure to surprise and impress appreciators of good genre titles who feel that their reserve of old films has run its course. This is one for the collectors.

    An interesting movie

    Though I would have preferred this movie be in color [the opening certainly is for some reason not the rest of the movie] Its one of those disaster movies that is not by today's standards the 2012 Hollywood type of film action film. Instead you've a thoughtful an slow build that's worth watching making you think an see the progression Earth is going through from Great Britain an how things are going downhill as the planet warms up as it gets closer to the sun. We of course don't see this in space but the evidence is certainly there. Will it appeal to younger kids? I don't think so they expect too much of slam bang type of movie, but for Scifi fans its worth watching. Note though its slow going yet an interesting movie to watch.
