The film represents Henry Fonda's return to the screen after an absence of seven years, part of which was spent playing the eponymous officer in the immensely successful stage version of Thomas Heggen's novel. As cargo officer and second in command on a supply ship during World War II, the easygoing Lt. Doug Roberts is excluded from a much desired combat role while playing whipping boy to dyspeptic tyrant Captain Morion (James Cagney). Ensign Frank Pulver (Jack Lemmon), a brash yet cowardly wheeler-dealer, entertains Roberts with his elaborate pranks while the fatherly Doc (William Powell in his last screen appearance) offers advice. The young crew tries every available means of killing boredom, including eyeballing the nurses on a nearby island through a telescope, and Roberts does what he can to get them the R and R they badly need. The film had a troubled production history, mostly because of conflicts between Fonda, a friend of author Thomas Heggen's, and Ford, who wished to make changes that Fonda disliked. Shortly after physically attacking Fonda, Ford suffered a ruptured gallbladder and was replaced by Mervyn LeRoy. Fonda is excellent, and Lemmon gives an inspired, Oscar-winning performance in a film that flows evenly from the comic to the tragic and stands among the best World War II films produced in the 1950s.

This is what a "fun" war movie is about!
It seems stranger to even say "fun" war movie but this is what this is. This movie with have catch you and put you on the USS Reluctant some place in the Pacific where you forget about life and dive into what our serviceman do when you have nothing to do! This movie is well directed and stars well known actors in their prime. It's hard to find anything wrong with this movie, it's a feel good movie that makes you happy and at times sad. The movie is filmed in that wonderful color that says "I was made when things were good for the USA". I strongly recommend the PART 2 to this movie "Ensign Pulver", it takes place where "Mister Roberts" leaves off, amd yes that move plays on the same idea but takes it a level or 3 higher with Robert Walker, Burl Ives and Walter Matthau. I own most WW2 UK and US movies made I have Three 400 disk DVD changers devoting one changer to War and History movies and I am glad that I able to find this to add to my collection. This is a classic that should be in your collection or for just a great feel good movie that will only make you feel bad until you get the Part 2 "Ensign Pulver". Pop the corn and have a great time!

A hilarious movie, James Cagney, as a Ships Commander, Henry Fonda, at his best as Mister Roberts, and Jack Lemmon as ensign pulver. Pulver with all the hairbrained ideas of a young ensign trying to live up to everyones expectations of himself, except himself. Mister Roberts, who is after the war effort, tired of being behind the safe lines of travel, wants to be in the real Navy fighting the real war, and not the war on tedium and apathy. Roberts comes to a head when he takes the ships prized possession and tosses it overboard, making the captain have a severe high blood pressure attack. The crew gets involved when they learn the real reason behind the new Mister Roberts. And Ensign Pulver, the wayward young man, comes into himself near the end of the film. Highly Recommended, 5 stars film of the classic film genre and in colour for those who don't like black and white films.

A classic movie dated into WW II
The movie is set in the waning days of World War Two. The men of the USS Reluctant (known to the crew as "the Bucket") are bored working a supply ship ferrying toothpaste and toilet paper to the fighting vessels of the Pacific theatre. James Cagney is the ship's Captain. As the story unfolds, you discover that he grew up with a pronounced Napoleonic complex and looks down on everyone around him. He delights in denying his crew the simplest pleasures and drives them to the breaking point in trying to make his cargo record as best as possible. Henry Fonda plays his first officer and his driving ambition is to get transferred to a "real" fighting ship, preferably an aircraft carrier or destroyer. Jack Lemon plays the part of a spineless jellyfish of an Ensign who is in charge of laundry and ... The movie is set in the waning days of World War Two. One day, Ensign Pulver ( Jack Lemmon), doesnt move fast enough and he is seen and questioned by the Captain, who is astounded that one of his officers could have been on board his ship for the last 18 months and he doesnt even know his face. Dont misunderstand this movie. It is NOT done along the lines of "The Caine Mutiny". This is a highly enjoyable comedy. It shows the daily life of seamen sailing through a life of boredom with little relief. Henry Fonda arranges for some shore leave on a beautiful tropical island unknownst to the Captain. Their first leave in over a year takes it toll on the men of the "bucket" and they are escorted back to the ship under military escort, where the Captain has to report to the island commander the next day, and the ship is thrown out of port. More adventures follow this, but eventually, Henry Fonda does get his transfer just after VE day but while the fighting is still going on in the Pacific against the Axis. Fonda is killed after his transfer and Ensign Pulver (Lemmon) reads the letter. In the last scene of the movie, he beats down the Captain's door and confronts him about priviledges that were removed from the men that day in a truly courageous manner that hadnt been seen throughout the entire movie. A must see for all ages with a fantastic cast of actors and actresses. You wont be disappointed.

gentle comedy with a twist of sadness
great cast, great script, great story, all well done. Of course the great John Ford directed most of it. you feel the pathos and the yearnings and the unfilled desires of men at war.
