Notes
Album review from Indie-Music.com: By Nancy Dunham Sometimes you come across an indie musician whose music is so compelling, so textured, so thoughtful, so - listenable - that you could swear it's from a major name. That's the case when you listen to Generation of Waste, the latest album by Control Escape. Perhaps it's the ease with which the music moves from acoustic to semi-punk to psychedelic. Maybe it's the lyrics that shift from plaintive pleading, to full-blown story telling to funky via cool word play and rich double meanings. Whatever the case, Control Escape is an indie that should be a major name. According to press materials, Ken Adams, the group's front man, sings and plays every instrument on the album. He has a co-lyricist who sings back up. A drummer and bass player join them on the road. It's terrific that Adams, and to an extent his cohorts, have gained some measure of acclaim. The hauntingly somber \'Iraq,\' which is basically an acoustic guitar piece with Adams' vocals, was selected for Neil Young's \'Living With War\' Web site. Control Escape's music also receives some play on college radio. That's just not enough, though. This package includes a mix of both powerful and playful messages wrapped in expertly yet artfully played music. What a shame that the package is apparently left unclaimed by so many. ---------------- Generation of Waste is Control Escape\'s debut LP. A champion of slacker culture, Control Escape slides from stoner punk to psychedelic singer-songwriter, crafting songs that are full of double meaning and self-deprecation. Thematically, Generation of Waste comments on the young American experience and the everyday struggle between conscience and convenience. Control Escape's frontman/multi-instrumentalist/producer Ken Adam sings and plays every instrument on Generation of Waste, including guitars, drums, bass, organ, accordion, violin, wall, and wine glasses. Ken Adam was born and raised in San Francisco, where he was classically trained as a flutist. From a young age he was encouraged to make his own instruments and even made a string bass out of an old wok and a goat\'s hide. (Today, he still mills all of his own drumsticks from locust trees that grow in his backyard in Central New York.) As a teenager, Adam was half of experimental hip-hop duo Natural Freak, and later played upright bass in the Cabrio College Orchestra. He is the grandson of acclaimed sculptor Ruth Asawa. While Asawa\'s work explores the forms and space echoed in nature, Adam's songs trace the cracks and spaces normally overlooked in human nature. Co-lyricist Peapod sings back-up and makes all of Control Escape's music videos, live video extravaganzas, and still images. She grew up in Reading, Pennsylvania. Live, the duo is joined by über drummer Chuck Raniewicz, and lead guitarist Zach "Big Stax" Rohrer, and bassist Travis Christie. The band is based in Ithaca, New York. Control Escape's political ballad Iraq is a Song of the Times on Neil Young's Living with War Today website. Their music video for Kenny\'s Big Adventure has been picked up by CGN7'S Northwest Video Showcase in Portland, OR. And eight of the album's ten tracks (1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 9, & 10) have already received play on college and/or internet radio. Liner Notes: Tracks 1, 2, 3, 7, & 8 written by Ken Adam (BMI). Tracks 4, 5, 6, 9, & 10 written by Ken Adam & Peapod (BMI). All tracks produced by Ken Adam. Recorded and mixed by Ken Adam at Radon Lab, Freeville, NY. All tracks mastered by Rob Beaton at the Pod, Los Angeles, CA.
