  • BUYER BEWARE! This is NOT the original version

If you are looking for the same content contained in the award-winning PBS documentary series, DO NOT buy this item. In its DVD incarnation, "Vietnam: A Television History" has been gutted and watered-down. Entire segments are missing; others have been edited beyond recognition. Here are some examples from the first episode alone: In one case, an interview with a French official has been deleted. In that interview (which is in the original series and on VHS), the official makes a memorably racist statement in which Vietnamese rebels are referred to as “red termites,” i.e. vermin to be exterminated. (Such a remark gives insight into the attitude of at least some of the French leadership at the times, and provides a graphic example of the dehumanizing aspects of ...

  • Vietnam - A Television History, a great series which belongs on the shelf of all students of history

This historical series is the best of all the Vietnam war video summaries. The producers begin before VN was a divided country and lead the viewer through a brief overview of Viet history. This helps to set the stage for the information that follows. Also included is a very brief treatment of what happened in Laos and Cambodia during the years of US involvement in Vietnam. Anyone who was alive during the turbulent 1960s and early 1970s will remember many of the names and personalities who were instrumental at the time of the US actions in those countries. Several of those personalities were interviewed for their own short verbal summaries of what happened and why. This is an excellent historical account given in top level summary format.

  • To Understand Iraq Debacle, Watch Vietnam Series

This 11 part (one hour each), PBS series is highly enlightening. It will show you how the US got sunk into the quagmire of Vietnam thru its own hubris and manipulations. It shows the violence against the Vietnamese, and the secret bombing by Nixon and Kissinger of the Cambodians (which caused the uprising of the Khymer Rouge!), and the Laotian peasants- supposedly because of the fear of Communism spreading everywhere in southeast Asia. Here's a number: 7 TIMES THE BOMBS WERE DROPPED ON VIETNAM, LAOS, AND CAMBODIA THAN ALL OF WORLD WAR II!!! This series shows the duplicity of US and South Vietnamese politicians, think tanks, etc. and the US grunts slogging it out in the swamps. The series gives a history of Vietnam from the French colonial period until the US became involved. It then ...

  • Important, vital documentary, still relevant.

This is a story that we need to keep hearing and learning from. Anytime anyone says "We learned the lesson of Vietnam," I tell them I don't think so. What evidence is there? The U.S. and Vietnam were fighting different wars, and we never understood the war they were fighting—part of a multi-generation, hundreds-of-years effort to free their country form outsiders, including the Chinese then the French, then the Americans. The Ken Burns documentary is invaluable, having access to people that were on both sides during the war. But the documentary made soon after the war is important too; we can learn from both. I highly recommend this to anyone who wants to understand this terrible chapter in human history.

Well-done documentary. One of Ken Burns. best. Not always for the faint of heart. But the story needed to be told. one of
