best of the available four volumes
I've got all four SCTV DVD volumes now, and this one is the best. Even with a smaller cast, the increased presence of Martin Short makes this set much more enjoyable. The only thing that disappointed was the commentary track on the Christmas episode by Catherine O'Hara and Martin Short - as much as I love them both for all their great characters, this commentary is flat and not very informative - at times painful to sit through. One of the major highlights for me is on Disc 6 - a laugh-out-loud edition of Mel's Rock Pile featuring the punk rock band, The Queen Haters, performing their hit, "I Hate The Queen." most of the hits are in this comedy bit
This is Canadian SNL at it's best. Skit comedy sometimes irreverent but often funny. No topic is left unturned. No cheap homemade ad goes unmocked. With Martin Short added, there's lots to cheer about, especially as Ed Grimley sticks his pointy head into other's business. But, losing Moranis, Thomas, and O'Hara does have a negative effect. Also missing is Six Gun Justice, a spoof classic. And, there are quite a few Days of the Week episodes to sit through here as well.This is Canadian SNL at it's best. Better than Saturday night live
I grew up as a child watching this show and wanting to relive those moments I found that this show is just as funny now as it was then.

The only thing to know that might be construed as a negative, is there won't be any viewing of Dave Thomas, Rick Moranis, and only one episode of Catherine O'Hara. They had moved on to other projects. The level of high-quality interplay from the cast is outstanding and unmatched. If you want to know why John Candy is an absolute legend, see these tapes. If you want to know why someone wants to marry Catherine O'Hara or Andrea Martin when they see them in a small part in some current movie, see these tapes.
