Gary Sinise enters the world of futuristic action heroes in Gary Fleder's sci-fi thriller IMPOSTOR, based on a story by Philip K. Dick. Sinise stars as Spencer Olham, a weapons expert in 2079 who wakes up one morning to find himself accused of being an alien. He sets out on the run, being hunted down by Major Hathaway (Vincent D'Onofrio). He receives help from an underground leader (Mekhi Pipher), and upon returning to the city, he must convince his wife, Maya (Madeleine Stowe), and his best friend, Nelson (Tony Shalhoub), that he is indeed her husband and not some kind of robot monster with a bomb in his chest.With IMPOSTOR, director Gary Fleder (DON'T SAY A WORD) has crafted an edgy, fast-paced film that contains elements of Alfred Hitchcock's THE WRONG MAN, Ridley Scott's BLADE RUNNER (also based on a Dick story), Andrew Davis's THE FUGITIVE, and Paul Verhoeven's ROBOCOP. Sinise gets to flex his muscles as he continually escapes from Hathaway and a torture device that Goldfinger would be proud of, the Vivisector. The futuristic, fascistic world created by production designer Nelson Coates and shot beautifully by cinematographer Robert Elswit is the perfect setting for this ultimate battle of man against machine, the individual against the state, love and humanity against order and militarism.

Another Philip K Dick's story, as we like them
A great cast for a great story with a nice twist, where the main character - a scientist specialized in weaponry in a future war against aliens, suddenly finds himself public enemy # 1 and doubting his own identity. Gary Sinise (Mission to Mars) is, as usual, exceptional. Vincent D'Onofrio, although a bit verbose, makes a decent "bad" government agent, and the atmosphere and visual effects credibly render the Earth at war in the year 2075. I recommend to first watch the short version of the movie, provided in the DVD as a special feature and which was the intended original version. This short film is well balanced and straight to the point: a great Philip K. Dick's story. The long version (a request from the production) has an added middle part dragging us through concrete corridors ... A great cast for a great story with a nice twist, where the main character - a scientist specialized in weaponry in a future war against aliens, suddenly finds himself public enemy # 1 and doubting his own identity. Good, but implausible
Philip K. Dick was well known for writing stories with characters having a sort of slippery grip on some aspect of reality. In this case, the main character, played by Gary Sinise, is a scientist who has been developing weapons for a war with the Centaurians, who only want Earth, not any peace or compromise. They have developed some technology that lets them duplicate humans so that it is impossible to tell them from the original. In this case, Sinise is supposedly carrying a bomb in his chest, surrounded by his heart, yet he is convinced he is human and spends the entire movie trying to prove his innocence. He goes through various very implausible escapes, getting through situations that would tax even well trained spy operatives, yet he is supposedly just a scientist, and doesn't even ... Philip K. He meets a sort of underground network of people who have been left unprotected from the devastation of the alien attacks. However, after all the machinations that Sinise goes through, and all the work viewers go through in identifying with him, it is disappointing to find out that we have all been fooled. It is a sort of betrayal of our faith in the end when Sinise does turn out to be not quite human and then all the build up, the expectation is deflated, and viewers have to think about how realistic is it necessary to be in order to be real. Perhaps this was what Dick intended, but the way it is presented makes viewers feel cheated by that vision overpowering the "truth" they've established via the vivid character portrayal.

I might have given it a 5, but it's been too long since I've seen it to remember for sure. Thriller. Drama. Action. A killer twist. Great movie! A Doctor (or scientist, I don't remeber which) - oh yeah set in the future - is accused of being a bomb. Aliens, or somebody, have been making replica people with bombs in there chest that explode when a certain trigger has occured (example if the clone/bomb was supposed to kill someone, they would clone someone who would have contact to that person and when they met, the bomb would go off). Clincher, not only is the 'bomb clone' comepletely undetectable, the 'bomb' don't know that they are a bomb! Well, not comepletely undetectable... The only way to test if they are a bomb would kill the person if they are not an actual bomb. Thus the Dr.'s ... An Excellent Sci-Fi Diversion
It is truly a shame that "Imposter" was so poorly received at the box office during its limited release. Instead of joining the ranks of other great sci-fi work at the time, fate decreed that this remarkable little thriller should fall through the cracks. Everything about "Imposter" is decidedly not B-list. The special effects and cinematography are surprisingly well rendered for such a low-budget film, the acting is top rate. The cast is even filled with one or two inspired choices (i.e. then-up-and-comer Mekhi Phifer as "zoner" Cale). Yes, it's true that "Imposter" loses something on a second viewing — what "twist" movie doesn't? — but on a first watch, the film is an excellent sci-fi diversion.It is truly a shame that "Imposter" was so poorly received at the box office during its limited release.
