In 30 years, I've never been so disappointed in a Cooper record. When I heard he was doing a concept album again, i was drooling! His previous concept album was "Last Temptation" in '94, which had terrific production, direction and )ahem) great songs. There is one great track on the new album, and it's the BALLAD. Probably one of his top five, and yet, what is missing most on this new disc is Bob Ezrin, his old producer. Bob new how to add depth and layering to the moods, and this album lacks EVERYTHING that was brilliant about 'Nightmare", "Goes To Hell" or "Billion Dollar Babies", which of course is the sound itself. This crap, (or 'Trash' if you will) is produced with that modern, flat, lifeless quality (!) that hollows ... In 30 years, I've never been so disappointed in a Cooper record. My eight year old son came into the room when i was listening to 'spider,'he asked me what was wrong with the stereo, why it sounded so bad!Even he thought that it was...DULL. y"know, I love Alice, but this album misses the mark on all counts. The lyrics are boring, ( UNlike most of his stuff) Singers' drumming does the same thing to Alice as he does to KISS, technically perfect, with no soul or excitement. Hey Coop, PLEASE bring back Allan Schwartzburg, or Neil Smith, (a REAL drummer) Bring back the original band, or Dick Wagner. By the way, his last cd "Dirty Diamonds" had a few left-field kind of songs, like 'Jesse Jane' wich was hilarious, and reminded me of old Alice, when he would take some chances with either the tempo, the idea itself, or adding saxophones, etcetera, (miss ya, Mr. Ezrin) I believe that If the Coop had taken this Spider to Bob Ezrin, he would say" Hmm, interesting idea, but there are only 2 songs worth keeping, and it needs more piano, strings and dynamics to make it a real Cooper concept album. There are no instant classics on this disc either, I've forced myself to listen to it seven times so far, and I just cannot get into it. perhaps it's not for me, perhaps i shouldn't knock a man in his early sixties who can still kick most bands asses half his age, but I really, REALLY wish this cd hadn't been made, I have to wait another 3 years before his next, and probably his last. Another mistake on this Spider is the terrible 'cut-and-paste' production.The album does not sound like a group of musicians, but rather a bunch of separate bars and bridges edited together to form(ula). CRAP, Alice!! You could have done so much more. Get a producer for gosh sakes!! Or let me or a fan do the next one, those people you've been hanging around with are a bunch of 'yes' men who have not given you enough perspective. Alices' best concept album was "From The Inside" It had amazing lyrics and dynamics and songs that were instantly classic. With "spider" all we have are over-used studio hand-claps and (really) the WORST excuse for lyrics in his whole catalogue. on his '82 album "Zipper," there's a song called "tag, you're it," it says in four minutes what it takes Alice 11 songs to on 'Spider'. All will be forgiven if he puts out a new album in '09. Lastly I will give you my top and bottom five for comparison: BEST: 1) FROM THE INSIDE 1978 2) BILLION DOLLAR BABIES 1973 3) GOES TO HELL 1976 4) WELCOME TO MY NIGHTMARE 1975 5) LACE AND WHISKEY 1977 WORST 1) PRETTIES FOR YOU 1969 2) EASY ACTION 1970 3) ALONG CAME A SPIDER 2008 4) ZIPPER CATCHES SKIN 1982 5) EYES OF ALICE 2003

Alice does it again!
What can I say about a dimented mega-madman who's been on the loose since his first album "Pretties For You" in 1968? At 60, he's still pulling off the same sick antics that repulsed and disgusted parents of the baby boom generation (and beyond). Along Came a Spider is definately no exception to his 40 year onslaught of criminal insanity. My favorite track on this CD is "Vengeance is Mine" which features awesome and crushing guitar work from Slash. I noticed that various other tracks on the CD reflect Alices raw vintage sound of the early 70s. The CD overall is very entertaining in a dimented serial killer sort of way which is why it is so very Alice! I remember my friends warning me to break away and stop listening to this madman otherwise I would end up ... alice returns to rock you hard
this is a great hard rock cd. It is a good horror story that fits in well with the character and musical style of Alice COOper. The riffs are hard and the the story about a serial killer is a good one. This cd is better than the last two alice cd's and they were pretty good. I think it's a good thing that older bands continue to put out new music. Why shouldn't they? It's a good thing to let them use their experience and ideas to come up with something that is enjoyable. Alice continues to stick to his hard rock roots and this reminded me of his 'welcome to my nightmare" era. If you love well made hard rock with good clean vocals then you will enjoy this latest cd from alice. The only bad thing is that you must download the extra tracks and I think ... this is a great hard rock cd. It is a good horror story that fits in well with the character and musical style of Alice COOper. The riffs are hard and the the story about a serial killer is a good one.
