A lot of switch in a small package.
I've deployed three of these, and like them. They're good for small and medium sized networks that use VLANs. They work fine with HP and Cisco managed switches. What's a VLAN? It's a technology that makes a single physical LAN operate like more than one physical LAN, by separating groups of ports into a "virtual LAN". The "magic" is that the ports are grouped across all the switches, so you have have, say "VLAN2" exist on more than one switch, and all the traffic is routed between those ports. Why does this help? Mainly, if you have a network where you want to separate out the office LAN from other "stuff" - like another person's office, or LANs for HVAC or phones, or something else - VLANs allow you to isolate them. You not only get isolation, but you can save a lot of money on ... I've deployed three of these, and like them. They're good for small and medium sized networks that use VLANs. The HVAC controller's ethernet cable goes into a nearby port, say, under someone's desk, and it's talking to another port down in the network closet. If you save yourself pulling one wire, it pays for this switch, and starts to justify using VLANs across the building. The GS108T has a warranty and 24/7 tech support, and it comes in a solid metal case. Cons: not as "enterprisey" as the Ciscos or HPs, and the web interface is a little odd. The SNMP features are fairly limited, but they do exist. You can see the traffic, and see errors, which is what you need.

Low cost Managed switch
Managed switches have many more features over non-managed switches. They allow a savvy user to control the network. This switch gives almost the same control as the big name commercial units for hundred(s) of dollars less. I needed to debug a 3rd party client-server system and I was able to use the port monitoring feature to snoop and debug the system. Pros: Low cost with good feature set. Defaults make it plug and play like an un-managed switch Cons. none of any significanceManaged switches have many more features over non-managed switches. Great switch
If you need a network switch on the cheap with enterprise grade 24/7 stability. Look no further. Bonus feature is it can be powered over Ethernet if you need it. For my home use, I have grown to trust Netgear prosafe equipment. I'll never by consumer trash again.

Overall, a great little switch, especially for the money!
This is really quite a fine little switch for the above-average home network or very small business network, especially given its fairly low price. I use it at home, primarily because I was looking for a switch that can handle 802.1q tags, and this little guy does that as well as some other features not found on your average switch. I can't speak directly of forwarding rate, mostly because I've never really tested it outright, but I suspect it performs quite well with its advertised forwarding rates and 9000-byte jumbo frame support. It's also been very reliable for me, I've had the switch running for well over a year, and have only had to reboot it once, and I wasn't even positive it was directly the switch's fault!This is really quite a fine little switch for the above-average home network or very small business network, especially given its fairly low price.
