Robert Altman offers his unique take on the institution of marriage with this raucous comedy about a wedding reception that quickly turns chaotic. When the Corellis and Brenners--two completely opposite families--convene to watch their children tie the knot, everything seems too good to be true. Affairs are initiated and alcohol is ingested, leading up to a thunderstorm--and the most shocking secret of all. Altman at his best. . . a rare gem!
Don't let the title fool you! For those of you who love Robert Altmans films, I happily recommend this rare little gem. The special features on this DVD alone well warrant your attention as Altman discusses not only the inception of this film, but the cast reflect on his process and the creative interplay that goes into every scene. Mr. Altman comments that the idea of the film started as a sarcastic retort when he was asked what his next film would be. . . . he said, enough of Hollywood - he's going to videotape weddings! And voila, the subject began to grow on him. Far from oeuvre of wedding comedies like Father of the Bride, The Wedding Planner etc, this subtle little drama splendidly weaves the lives of its characters around the very event that changed their lives and re-addresses ... Don't let the title fool you! For those of you who love Robert Altmans films, I happily recommend this rare little gem. Outstanding performances by Carol Burnett, and Pat McCormick, (the first serious role I've seen McCormick ever take on.) as they find themselves embroiled in a tryst of unrequited love. Paul Dooley, turns in an admirable performance as Burnett's foul weathered husband. Geraldine Chaplin is hysterical as the power hungry wedding planner, a touching farewell performance by Lilliann Gish, and I must say - a scene stealing performance by Mia Farrow, who never utters a word throughout the entire film. Rent it for a laugh, buy it for the love. . . . a statement apropos to the subject and title of this little gem by Altman.

A hard to find offbeat gem from the late 1970s. It was a joy to see it again, in good condition and at a reasonable price.

a great movie
What Altman did best was assemble large name cast and put them in a simple everyday situation with an assortment of problems and this film is one of the best. It's about a wedding, all those involved and each member problem is unique and disturbing at least to the character. An all star cast. One of Carol Burnett's best cinematic events.
