À propos de ce produit

Product Information

Dennis Quaid stars as a bitter, washed out widower in SMART PEOPLE, a film that tackles the lives of several seriously unhappy people in surprisingly funny and touching ways. A hated literature professor at Carnegie Mellon, Lawrence Wetherhold has been earning the scorn of his students, colleagues, and family since the death of his wife several years ago. The only person on his side is his teenage daughter Vanessa (Ellen Page), whose loyalty and similarities to her father belie her tender age. Between running the Young Republicans club and aiming for a perfect SAT score, the over-achieving high school student knows no life beyond the insular world of family. When the film begins, the family dynamics are well established, with Lawrence merely going through the motions of his life, unable to muster up any passion for parenting or even his literary expertise. It takes a seizure, an unexpected visit from his adopted brother (Thomas Haden Church), and a new romantic interest (Sarah Jessica Parker) to shake things up and stir Lawrence from his constant misery.Driven by a clever script and fine performances, SMART PEOPLE is set in the land of academia, a place where both Lawrence and Vanessa have taken refuge and plunged themselves into as escape from the external world. In spite of their high IQs, both father and daughter are equally clueless when it comes to navigating relationships. This becomes obvious as Vanessa develops a line-blurring relationship with her uncle, and Lawrence stumbles in romancing his doctor. If Vanessa wants a shot at happiness and Lawrence wants to make things work in his love life, both will have to adopt new attitudes or risk further alienation. Church is hilarious as Chuck, Lawrence's adopted slacker brother, adding a funny but heartfelt element to the otherwise serious film.

Avis les plus pertinents

  • Smart People

This is a really terrific little film with a fantastic cast of top notch personel really delivering a smart screenplay with witty and clever dialog. I won't waste your time with another synopsis of the film but instead I want to really suggest you see it both for the terrific writing but also for the amazing performance of Ellen Page (Juno). Page is a revelation. She steals scenes from veteran actors and runs away with so many well delivered verbal shots you just can not help but really want to see more of her. Thomas Hayden Church is right back in form from his great performance in Sideways. So give this one a chance, I think you will really enjoy it. Few things in life are really funnier than brilliant people that are socially retarded!

  • Crassly opportunistic...

This movie was made before "Juno," but remained on the shelf. It is clear now why--- it's just not very good. Ellen Page's Oscar nomination, and her incredible performance in "Juno" got some studio to do some thinking. "Aha!" they probably thought,"Here's a way to cash in her new found fame, and unload this turkey." The studio peeps were, in fact very smart people. The movie, however, is rather dull and depressed. It was interesting to hear Page's perky "smart alec" voice in a character she played before "Juno." It indicates that much of what she showed us in "Juno" was HER, and not mere dialog or direction. Alas, the characters in "Smart People," especially Dennis Quaid's, were scruffy dim-bulbs, and not very pleasant, not admirable, nor watchable. Bottom line, this clunker had sat ...

  • Smart People has Smart Acting

Besides a witty and intelligent script, SMART PEOPLE has an ensemble of four excellent actors, including a pre-JUNO Ellen Page who all provide a great interpretation of their roles. If you like movies that remind you of the theater experience with the simple exploration and interactions of defined characters, you will enjoy this movie. If you grew up in a household of National Honor Society crazed students, Ellen Page's character will bring back memories.

  • Excellent and funny movie

I liked this movie immediately when I saw it on an HBO channel. It was so smart and funny. Dennis Quaid is excellent as the put-upon professor, and Thomas Haden Church is great as the uncle. I like Ellen Page and she is great as the sassy smart-assed daughter too. The movie is set in Pittsburgh, and being from there, I also liked that. It has a good plot and a happy ending. I liked Sarah Jessica Parker in this, although it is a far cry from her "Sex and the City" character, which I am used to.

  • Smart People

This movie was okay. I bought this movie because I collect Sara Jessica Parker Movies. Sara had one of the main roles in this film and was very good in her role.
