TALK TO ME's Ralph Waldo "Petey" Greene isn't quite the household name that some of his contemporaries (such as Richard Pryor or Redd Foxx) are, but this smart drama about the Washington, DC, disc jockey is a fascinating film. At the film's opening in the mid-1960s, Greene (Don Cheadle, HOTEL RWANDA) hosts a beloved radio show--at the prison where he makes his home. While visiting his incarcerated brother, Dewey Hughes (Chiwetel Ejiofor, INSIDE MAN) hears Greene's brash humor and honesty, but he brushes off Greene's attempts at a job at the radio station where Hughes works. But Greene is soon released from prison, and he won't forget his dreams of hosting his own radio show. He hounds the staff of a Washington R&B station, including Hughes and the station manager (Martin Sheen, THE WEST WING). When he finally gets a job, his show resonates with the people of the city and the changing times of the civil rights movement.TALK TO ME could be just another biopic or racial drama, but thanks to its fine cast, it rises above the standard fare. Cheadle is engaging as the electric Petey Greene, equally adept at portraying both Greene's pathos and his humor. While Ejiofor has excelled in smaller roles in INSIDE MAN and CHILDREN OF MEN, this drama could represent a chance for him to move into leading-man territory. Henson was wonderful as the meek Shug in HUSTLE & FLOW, but she ably transforms into the vivacious Vernell here. Director Kasi Lemmons (EVE'S BAYOU) lets the performances drive the film, but they're supported by a strong script and period details that make the film worth watching.

    Highlights the life and the impact of 1960's radio icon

    This movie must have gotten lost in the shuffle of big blockbuster releases and it deserves so much better. In the 1960s and `70s, Petey Greene (Don Cheadle) talking, as a "tell it like it is" radio DJ in Washington, D.C. You may have never heard of him but he was so popular in the D.C. area, that when he died more than 10,000 people came to his memorial service. Petey was funny, inspiring and a fierce community activist. He was, at times, also over the top with his self-destructive behavior. He was an ex con man, and Cheadle's portrayal is right on target. The "git down" Petey you hear and see on-screen, by all accounts is Petey Greene as he was, unlike the shock jock posers of today.     *** GOOD MOVIE!! INSPIRING!!! A GOOD WATCH!!! 7/10 ***

    EXACTLY WHAT WE HAD EXPECTED!! A GOOD MOVIE and a GOOD cast!! Cedric doesnt play a major role, as we would have liked to see more of him. INSPIRATIONAL!! A GOOD MOVIE based on a convict, and a Radio-Head/morning talk show radio in need of an uplifting. Inspired by a True Story. A GOOD MOVIE!! Rent It or Buy It? Henson.This movie takes place during the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960's.     Historical drama

    This film takes place in the 1960’s through the early 1980’s. Until I saw a preview of this film on another DVD, I had never heard of Petey Greene or Dewey Hughes. I have an appreciation for both of their contributions to the business of entertainment- including radio and television. The film is heartwarming, entertaining and educational (although not appropriate for children due to strong language). I will definitely watch this film again.

    Must See

    I loved this movie so much, I ordered 10 and gave them away as Christmas gifts to friends and family. Don Cheadle was excellent, as well as the entire cast. I laughed, I cried and I remembered. This movie took you back in time with accuracy to detail and excellent acting. While this movie is not for family viewing, sometimes it's nice to be an adult with adult company and entertainment. Initially I was embarrased by my show of emotions at the theatre, until looking around. I soon discovered everyone else in the theatre was as emotional about this movie as I. This movie was courageous in it's depicition of a very well liked and admired entertainer/dj in the Black community.
