Product Information

Screen legend Peter O'Toole stars in this moving story of an elderly actor and his somewhat questionable relationship with a teenage girl. Maurice (O'Toole) and his friend Ian (Leslie Phillips) are two classy curmudgeons whiling away their hours in coffee shops and at the theater, but their routine is thrown for a loop when Ian's niece's daughter Jessie (Jodie Whittaker) is sent from the country to act as his nurse. Jessie shows up on the scene sullen and pouty, immediately drinking all the liquor in the house and slouching her way from room to room. But Maurice befriends her, taking her to museums and getting her a gig as an art model, and along the way he openly expresses the lust she has awakened in him. Jessie's brash rejections of his affections are at first as amusing as they are awkward. When she starts to allow him small pleasures--like kissing her bare shoulders or caressing her hands--the film enters into some uncomfortable, complicated territory, but it is deftly navigated by Hanif Kureishi's sharp screenplay, and O'Toole's heartbreaking performance. VENUS is in many ways a quiet film, shot mainly in tiny shops and in Ian's musty apartment, and it often relies on single shots of O'Toole's weary blue eyes to convey the many complexities within the story. Far from just a tale of a May-December romance, VENUS is a very raw look at growing old, and the aches and pains, both emotional and physical, that accompany a man near the end of his life. It is an honest, moving portrait of human desire, and how it can both beat us down and lift us up--no matter the age.

    Depressing and rather dark

    I watched this film basically because of Peter O'Toole and his career history. At first I liked the story of several "older' gentlemen and how each one was dealing with old age and the reality of the end of life looming on the near horizon and how they would come to terms with that, if at all. It was nice to see that they had a small group of friends for support. Peter O'Toole's past history shows him as a "once very famous" aging actor, still managing to get work but cast in limited roles due to his advanced age. In to the story line is inserted a teenage girl of "questionable taste", to say the least, who has come to live with and help his elderly friend. As the story progresses he becomes drawn to her..she -many times- his junior. That thought was rather disturbing to me. The message I ...

    Venue~w/ Screen legend Peter O'Toole

    Stange little Miramax film featuring screen legend Peter O'Toole. Playing his first leading film role in perhaps two decades, the still charismatic, handsome and silver-tongued star scores a bull's-eye here as an aged thespian who, despite failing health, can't resist playing out a final dalliance of a sort with a mouthy young girl. Strangely reminicent of Lost in Translation, if you injoy that film or Peter O'Toole, you'll have to see this ONE!

    A movie that lets us know that Peter O'Toole is still with us...

    "Venus" is a movie that lets us know that Peter O'Toole is still alive and still putting on a grand performance. The movie is amusing in many different ways, funny at times, sad at times... The story line is interesting... has a bit of Pygmalion in it, but updated to suit the tastes of the 21st Century -- a little like My Fair Lady & Lolita meet Grumpy Old Men... or 3 Men and a Baby in which the baby is a pouty and ego-centric teenager who shows herself to be a good-hearted kid in the end... The film takes a strangely honest -- though somewhat uncomfortable -- light-hearted look at lechery -- which is, very often, all that is left of sex and sexuality to older males -- older gentlemen who remember what it was like to enjoy the act -- and who still want that connection to those physical ...

    Priceless Gem w/Peter O'Toole & Vanessa Redgrave

    This amazing film begins in a British diner, with Peter O'Toole and older age men friends hanging out, reading the newspaper & dishing about others. The, one of the chums enters apoplectic over his great niece's visit & behaviors. In short time, O'Toole, an aged actor, agrees to take the young barely adult woman off of his friend's hands; but, he leads the audience (and her) to believe he's rather a dirty older man. If you actually watch the entire film and still believe that's what this wonderful plot is all about, you've totally missed the major plot points. O'Toole becomes an avant garde mentor on how to really live for this young woman. Vanessa Redgrave plays O'Toole's slightly younger ex-wife who he apparently left ...

    2007 British Acting Legends Transcend Age Type-Casting

    Peter O'Toole was 74yo when playing Maurice, the leading actor in this film. He is a silver screen & stage legend with nominations for 8 Oscars, another 21 major acting award wins & 25 more nominations. Vanessa Redgrave was 3 days shy of 70yo when this film was released. Redgrave plays Valerie, Maurice's slightly crippled (ex?) wife & mother of his three (unseen) children. Jodie Whitaker was 25yo when she played the leading lady, Jessie; Maurice's 'Venus', in this, her 1st motion picture! Together O'Toole and Whitaker are the approximate ages of their characters.
