NORTH BY NORTHWEST is a suspense thriller that finds Cary Grant in the role of Roger Thornhill, a Manhattan advertising executive mistaken for a spy. Considered by many to be the prototypical pure action movie (creating the template for later James Bond and Indiana Jones films), the film is a cross-country roller-coaster ride with Alfred Hitchcock at the helm. The film is duly famous for several classic and indelible scenes, including the desert biplane encounter and the Mt. Rushmore climax. The original title was THE MAN IN LINCOLN'S NOSE, which was replaced by a reference to a line from William Shakespeare's HAMLET (in which Hamlet says, "I am but mad north-north-west."). The magical combination of Hitchcock and the debonair Grant--who made four wonderful films together--makes NORTH BY NORTHWEST a suspense-filled standout. When Thornhill finds himself in the wrong place at the wrong time, the world as he knows it comes to an end. Suddenly danger threatens as the hapless businessman is targeted as an American intelligence agent and set up as a killer. All of Thornhill's attempts to straighten things out only make matters worse--and soon the desperate man is on the run from murderous foreign operatives, the CIA, and the police. The supporting cast, including Eva Marie Saint, James Mason, and Martin Landau, is uniformly excellent.

    A CLASSIC MOVIE ALL SHOULD SEE

    This movie is one of my all time favorites. I have watched it multiple times alone and with family and friends. I never tire of seeing it again and some have actually requested a rerun. It is classic Alfred Hitchcock and ranks up there with the likes of Casablanca and The African Queen. There is mystery and excitement along with inrugue. All of the actors ar superb. It thoroughly entertains without the blood and guts, violence and graphic sex and language featured in so many of today's feature films. A very real family classic. DB

    A Hitchcock film for everybody.

    N by NW is a classic, well written and superbly shot film. The only thing I noticed is: If I didn't know it was a Hitchcock film, I would never know. It seems he changed a lot of his style in this picture. Not sure if he used a different Director of Photography or a different producer, but it just seemed really simple for how great of a director he is. Other than that, it is a wonderful chase/spy caper and the time period is so much fun. Very classy wardrobe, props, etc. And of course the on-screen sexual tension between Grant and Eve Marie Saint is soooo far ahead of its time, but very well acted! You will love this film even if you are not a big Hitch fan... and the specials features are top notch also!

    WWII spies, suave, handome men, lovely women and mistaken identity make for a great movie experience.

    Cary Grant is so smooth in this part you are immediately pulled along with him deeper and deeper into the plot. A "must have" in any movie goer's collection.

    Exceeded Expectations!

    First off, Cary Grant is his usual fantastic self in this film. Plus, Alfred Hitchcock once again proves himself well before his cinematic time. While many other movies from that era tended toward poor cinematography, cheesy acting, and lousy special effects, North By Northwest is obviously well ahead of the pack. The Mount Rushmore climax could have been cheap as all get-out, but I actually believed the entire scene. I just wonder what amazing films Hitchcock would be producing if he were still alive, in business, and had today's filmmaking technology at his disposal.
