Director Tamara Jenkins made audiences sit for nearly a decade for her follow-up to the hilarious dark comedy SLUMS OF BEVERLY HILLS, but it's been worth the wait. Like her previous film, THE SAVAGES is a sometimes-funny, sometimes-sad look at family dynamics, but this time around the sense of humor is more wry than riotous. Laura Linney and Philip Seymour Hoffman play Wendy and Jon Savage, a pair of siblings on the cusp of middle age. She's earning money in New York City as a temp as she writes an autobiographical play about their childhood, while he lives in Buffalo, teaching college and finishing a book on Bertolt Brecht. Their estranged father (Philip Bosco) lives across the country, but the Savages reluctantly rush to see him when they learn that he may not be able to take care of himself any longer. Jon and Wendy bicker over problems old and new as they try to figure out what's best for a man they barely know.Like Noah Baumbach in THE SQUID AND THE WHALE and MARGOT AT THE WEDDING, writer-director Jenkins knows how to mine family dysfunction for both comedy and drama. Jon and Wendy tear into each other as only people connected by blood can, but their fighting feels entirely genuine, largely thanks to the performances of Linney and Hoffman. Though they'll get most of the buzz for their roles, character actor Bosco is heartbreaking as their aging father. Though his decline is difficult to watch, the actor's performance is absolutely mesmerizing.

Good and very real.
The acting in this movie is awesome. It is a story that is very real and that most people will live themselves at some point in their lives. The dysfunction of the family members and the history of their past was beautifully played and incredibly realistic. It was not overdone, over the top or underdone. It was just plain human. There are funny moments sprinkled in the film. Not a knee slapper as the preview can lead you to believe.The acting in this movie is awesome. It is a story that is very real and that most people will live themselves at some point in their lives. Good acting, so so story
First of all I want say that i hate when eBay buyers use this 'review' forum to say that they are dissatisfied with an eBay purchase! -So anyway this movie was good. Fine acting from Hoffman and fine supporting acting also. Hoffman stands out and there is a real brother/sister chemistry between he and Laura Linney. I thought the story could have evolved better maybe going into the past father-children relationship and how the family was disfunctional. So the movie was worth seeing for Philip Seymore Hoffman who I sort of look like... Getting Even with Dad
If you look for honesty portrayed in film, you can't do much better than The Savages. This is an example of the type of film that rarely sees the light of day, simply because it refuses to compromise. Despite it's grim subject matter, there is plenty of humor in this film, which mainly arises from the absurdity of situations that feel so genuinely familiar. All the performances across the board are fantastic, and Ms. Jenkins was miraculously able to get funding for a film that didn't include the casting of a single "pretty young thing". Every single person in the the film genuinely looks like the real article (note: for equally impressive casting, check out Sarah Polly's "Away From Her".) hilarious but true
This is a dark comedy about a brother and sister who's last name is savage, they must find a nursing home for their dad. If you are in the same boat, you Have to see this movie. It will help you laugh during a very stressful time. A MUST SEE movie if you are going through this, Even though it's funny, the content in the movie is very true and easy to relate to but it is also hilarous with a fantastic cast. GOTTA SEE IT!This is a dark comedy about a brother and sister who's last name is savage, they must find a nursing home for their dad. If you are in the same boat, you Have to see this movie. Hoffman is a true genius. R. I.P. to one of the best ever.
This is a incredible movie, it’s raw, and as real as it gets. Beautifully acted by a true legend. I recommend this movie for anyone that is a buff. I’m very happy that I found it, mint condition, great price, and came fast. 10/10.
