Anyone who grew up in Southern California will talk with both nostalgia and frustration about the periodic summers of drought in which the oppressive heat is exacerbated by a shortage of its antidote--fresh water. In 1975, a clan of scruffy, rebellious teens found a way to turn this dearth to their advantage, using the sloping bowl of empty suburban swimming pools to create a new underground sport--skateboarding. The development, explosion, and corporate co-opting of this now ubiquitous sport was the subject of Stacy Peralta's acclaimed 2002 documentary, DOGTOWN AND Z-BOYS. Peralta, one of the original skaters who came to be known as the "Z-Boys," has penned this dramatized account of his own story, a kinetic and gripping tale with dramatic turns reflective of the extreme crests and falls of those concrete waves.When a shipment of polyurethane wheels arrives at Venice Beach's Zephyr surf shop, the proprietor, Skip (Heath Ledger), puts together a team of roughly a dozen local layabouts to try his new idea. At lightning speed, the three most talented become international stars, infusing sexuality, danger, and punk rock into a sport formerly associated with kneesocks and lite pop. LORDS OF DOGTOWN principally follows these three as they deal with sudden fame and fortune. Stacy (John Robinson) is the elegant, responsible beauty. Tony Alva (Victor Rasuk) is a frizzy-haired heartthrob with an overblown ego and penchant for pugilism. And Jay (Emile Hirsch), arguably the most compelling of the leads, supports his drug-addicted mother and is too cynical to be lured by the temptations of corporate vultures. Director Catherine Hardwicke, who fused gritty documentary techniques and high teen drama to great acclaim in her first feature, THIRTEEN, perfects that style here. The combination of a pulsating punk rock soundtrack, dynamic skateboarding sequences, and a gripping narrative combine in a forceful sweep that keeps viewers glued to the screen.

    A true to life drama, action movie that depicts the origins of Skater Culture in America. Brilliantly produced, filmed, and acted. Awesome soundtrack.

    This movie is mostly an accurate depiction of the lives of the early days of the creation of American skater culture. It is well produced and the actors portrayals hold true to the real life characters of the story. The soundtrack is awesome. Even if viewers are not into the skater culture, the movie can be interesting and entertaining to a variety of people from various backgrounds and mature ages.

    Lords of Dogtown True life movie

    Lords of Dogtown is the movie based on the True story of The Legendary Z-boys, the original purveyors of Extreme Skateboarding/ Sports. The movie, based on the Stacy Peralta documentary Dogtown and Z-boys, tells their story from teenage punks just having fun to Fame and fortune. Also showing the ups and downs of each dude, Stacy Peralta, Jay Adams and Tony Alva. Excellently portrayed!

    Gritty Coming of Age Story!!!

    Good story about what success can do to friends and how each handles it. Worth viewing once even if you are not a skateboard or surf fan. Has a lot of moments and situations that make you can relate to. Be careful to keep this away from the kids for drug use situations and sexual content. Feels real and gritty. Check it out. Probably a rental for most. 3.5/5

    Will Watch This DVD Again !

    Thoroughly entertaining. Director Catherine Hardewicke and Writer Stacy Peralta, one of the original Z-Boys, captures the real-life characters and milieu of a specific culture, during a specific time, and at a specific place. Brings to life what most of us could only read about in magazines. Compelling performances are framed by energetic photography. Plenty of Special Features including interviews with Director Hardewicke, a perfect choice to direct, Writer Peralta, and some of the original Z-Boys. Nice companion piece to the documentary, which I think is now packaged with Lords Of Dogtown DVD in a special edition.

    Perfect fit.

    I am a Venice/ Santa Monica local. I enjoy the old history of this area. I was part of the late 70's Bodybuilding seen and I surfed BAY st. This is what does it for me, it's about the history of my area and SoCAL. Thanks.
