This beautifully filmed, expertly acted movie about two 17-year-old, middle-class Mexican boys on summer break is deceivingly complex. The basic plot of the film is that best friends Tenoch (Diego Luna, BEFORE NIGHT FALLS) and Julio (Gael Garcia Bernal, AMORES PERROS), who think of nothing but sex, convince a beautiful 28-year-old woman, Luisa (Maribel Verdu), to go on a road trip with them to a nonexistent beach. They get lost. They flirt and giggle and fawn over Luisa hoping to win her over with their boyish charms. And that's about it. But that simple plotline merely provides structure for the poetry and meaning that is woven into the film with photography and narration. Periodically throughout the film, while the action continues normally, the sound stops. A voice over then gives information--sometimes a brief biography of one of the characters (birth date, name of father and mother, consequences of birth, primary childhood experiences), or a note about what each of the characters is really thinking, or a news report or historical comment that brings Mexico's tangled politics into the context of daily life. Never is the voice connected to a character in the film. It simply floats. Meanwhile, underwater photography, roving shots of the Mexican countryside, and affectionate close-ups on the characters communicate a solemnness that is not present in the plot. All of these pieces fit together easily, resulting in an excellent, whole, thoughtful film.

Sex and socieconomic class in Latino cinema-- Wild
Before Alfonso Cuaron started doing Harry Potty films, he made this movie. Y Tu Mama Tambien is one of the sexiest, funniest, and subtly Marxist films I've seen. Yes, class consciousness is the subtext here, played out between the rich son of the crooked politician (Diego Luna)and his best friend the poor kid (Gael Garcia Bernal in the role that really made him) and in the way that the camera often leaves the main characters to track the daily routines of the working class peple that seamlessy surround their lives. This movie is not for the prudish-- prepare for frank teenage male sexuality, portrayed in a thankfully healthy and nonjudgemental manner (no, Todd Solondz, we don't want your sick perversion). With wonderful surprises at the end of the film, it is a movie that, in subsequent ... Before Alfonso Cuaron started doing Harry Potty films, he made this movie. A seriously made film, fun, wild, and honest.
I wanted to own this film which I had seen when it was released in 2002.I understand that it was a very big hit in Mexico where the theater lines wrapped around the streets. It's become a classic at this point, sometimes thought of as a cult film, although label would narrow its appeal. I think it's a carefully made literary film. It's a well-written tale of the two sides of life, the rich and the poor, the young and the old, the well and the sick, the male and the female, and most especially, the old Mexico that is being replaced by the modern one. It's got heavy duty emotional stuff that is not for the narrow-minded, full of unbounded, but honest sexuality. It looks at the passionate joys of two male adolescents on a last fling the summer before leaving that world of innocence. It ... I wanted to own this film which I had seen when it was released in 2002.I understand that it was a very big hit in Mexico where the theater lines wrapped around the streets. Hot Sex on a Platter!!!
Whew!! That opening scene alone nearly did me in ... No Seriously. GREAT Movie, Good Performances by all. The 2 young actors.... Very Good, I hope I will see them in more movies. The woman OUTSTANDING!!! very convincing. This is more than just a tale of 2 young boys on the road with a older woman to whom they both have sex with. There is a real story here. There are glimpes into the Middle Class life in Mexico, the poverty and how it must be to be a "middle class" teenager in Mexico. I believe one of my fellow reviewers mentioned the Political under currents in the movie, yes, they are there but it doesn't take away from the movie I believe it was the writer and directors intent to let the viewers know what was going on in these young mens world. I find that I can't pinpoint them all, however I must mention that there are quite a few sexual scenes in it and I do not recommend it if you are not open to the possiblity of homosexuality, or if you find drug usage offensive then this may not be the movie for you. One thing that I have noticed, lately with my Foreign Film selections, is that the movies don't always have a Happy ending. They don't tend to leave any loose ends, but it isn't always what you think it might be...... watch the movie it is rather a good pick.... and despite what you may have heard there is a very good story here. Respectfully Reviewed
