Cutting the cord for real.
Ive searched and searched every possible avenue of cutting the cord from cable satellite providers but they got me used to she simplicity of DVRing my shows. Since u have to spend a fortune with any provider to get the only cable channels i watch (mlb network, Velocity, etc) i decided to pull the trigger. The Channel Master does what it advertises. No frills recording from the OTA antenna. Perfect. I considered all of the other options out there and this seemed the best value as i have no other expences other than the initial investment. The guide works and looks great. The signal transfer is as good or better than all of my previous providers. The bonus is the audio processing is great. I do use a Roku for Hulu and Netflix and integration of these services would be great but i am not ... Tuner is not as good as my HDTV
This is a good product and the refurbished unit is just like new with a warranty. However, I have found that the tuner is not as good as my LG HGTV and the result is that the recording quality isn't as good as it could be. Maybe they will fix this with a software release or a newer model with better tuner hardware. One would think that these would have the same quality tuners as mainstream TV's, but that does not appear to be the case. And, I have adjusted my antenna dozens of times trying to improve picture quality plus I'm using Channel Master's 7777 high powered amplifier on my antenna, so I have taken all of the necessary measures to improve my signal quality. Simple OTA recording device
Device recognized external USB powered hard drive and set it up for recording. An external drive does turn off internal 16GB for recording. The software provides basic functions. I'm accustom to using Windows Media Center for recording so many of those features are not available. Does not share recordings on local network (DLNA). Great OTA DVR with PiGS
This is a great DVR. I have four of them around the house on TVs. Haven't had any real problems with any of them so when I see one at a good price on eBay I buy another. With a 1TB USB drive, the DVR can record hundreds of hours of shows. Channel Master's free program guide doesn't work as well as it used to, but a free third party application called PiGS uses Schedules Direct data to provide an enhanced program guide for the DVR+ which breathes new life into this older DVR. This is a great DVR. I have four of them around the house on TVs. Haven't had any real problems with any of them so when I see one at a good price on eBay I buy another. Did My Research - Delivers On My Expectations
I've been researching cord cutting options for almost a year, and one of the items I couldn't live without is a DVR. I previously had a DVR with my satellite provider, and wanted the same experience. The DVR+ was very easy to setup, and detected my 1TB hard drive immediately and only took about 5 minutes to completely setup the OTA channels in my area. I would recommend to anyone that is looking to switch the OTA from cable/satellite to research what you need on Digital Home in Canada, or the AVS Forums in the U.S. on this product and OTA sections for your region/area. They were a great help in not only choosing this unit, but also the antenna setup I would require. After using the unit for 2 weeks, it isn't the most intuitive DVR, but does the job as advertised. PROS: -Unit was refurbished by the manufacturer (Channel Master), but looked new -Easy to setup - I had everything with my antenna and cabling ready to go. Found all the local channels quickly -Could easily hide all the unwanted channels from the guide -Picked up about 70 channels - only 3 didn't have guide data on the Rovi guide once I figured out how to set it up. -Very small unit - easily blends in and hides by my TV - much smaller than anticipated. Expected it to by a laptop size, but more like a tablet -Delivery price was good compared to the price at Canadian retailers. Even though I had to pay tax and duty on delivery, still cheaper then major electronic stores in Canada through the manufacturer's eBay sale -Didn't buy the USB WIFI adapter - however, connected the DVR+ to my laptops WIFI to get a connection -The free Channel Master TV channels through the internet are a great bonus - not the most well known channels, but good substitutes for cable news, music, and some cable channels I no longer get. CONS: -Remote is annoying in that the off button, when other components are programmed, turns off my TV and audio system - I have other devices on my system and wish you could turn off components individually, then one button for all -The skip buttons have some lag - I have my skip forward button set for 30 seconds, but has a lag of 1 or 2 seconds before you can hit is again. My previous DVR didn't have this lag. Adds about 10 seconds to commercial break skips -Took awhile to find the right Zip/Postal Code to populate the online guide service from Rovi -The Channel Master OTT Internet channels do not have programming guides, and some are delayed (RT for example is 15 minutes behind). It includes WGN from Chicago, but not the main channel that has sports programming - it is just WGN News Overall, I am satisfied after 2 weeks. I no longer pay the big Telco/cable/satellite overlords $100 a month!
