My friends, for any kid (or adult, for that matter) who has ever felt like life is constantly handing them the short end of a s**t covered stick... For anyone who has endured the trials and tribulations of a cruelly fickle world (particularly the amusingly bizarre world of high school)... And for those of you who know what it's like to want SO badly the one thing it seems you will never have.. the achingly beautiful (and irritatingly popular) girl who probably doesn't even know your name, and that you can never find the courage to talk to, but whom you can never get out of your head.. the girl who was "put on this Earth just to make you feel bad"... This is your movie. It's certainly not the first "fat and/or unpopular kid (complete with goofy friend) has unrequited crush on beautiful ... My friends, for any kid (or adult, for that matter) who has ever felt like life is constantly handing them the short end of a s**t covered stick... For anyone who has endured the trials and tribulations of a cruelly fickle world (particularly the amusingly bizarre world of high school)... This is your movie. It's certainly not the first "fat and/or unpopular kid (complete with goofy friend) has unrequited crush on beautiful girl in school while having several run-ins with the class jerk who loves to make unpopular kids miserable" movie, but it's certainly my favorite. I saw it in the theater, and the whole theater (all 7 or 8 of us) was cheering and yelling.. standing, even.. towards the end. I don't know why this never made it to DVD (is no longer in print for ANY format, from what I understand), but it is a crying shame. Maybe it's not an Oscar-winner, but for golly's sake... with the amount of crud that is continually put out on DVD, I don't know why this movie is singled out for extinction. Quite sad.

Angus is a very intelligent teenager, but he is only judged by his physical attributes. He's overweight and geeky and has only one friend who is even geekier the he. To make matters worse, Angus has a thing for Melissa Lefevre (Ariana Richards from Jurassic Park) who is the most popular and attractive girl in school. This is a very realistic, but down-beat, movie with what seems lowered expectations on happiness and the future for young people in the 90s. Very fine performance by George C. Scott as Angus' Grandpa Ivan. Scott and Talbert create the most realistic depiction of a non standard ... I love this movie because it is an excellent example of how the teenage underdog can prevail. I knew I had to have it when my 13 year old son was so similiar to Angus in what he was experiencing at school and I wanted him to see that school is messy. So much in fact they made a movie about it!! The music in the movie is also amazing! I highly recommend this movie to anyone with children. It's a good view of love, relationships, true friendships, family, and we have all been there before!! They only thing I wish I could change was the format. I wish I could have found it on dvd. But, well worth the money and Ebay was the only place I could find it when I needed it!I love this movie because it is an excellent example of how the teenage underdog can prevail. What a great movie about growing up and staying true to your heart. I could not find this movie on dvd so vhs had to do. The storyline is classic and appeals to all. I love when the good guy gets the girl!
