Well worth the time. Not a "training video", but quite informative.
Bought this for my stepdaughter's bulldog pup, who needs her and her children to learn how to be his pack, with her as leader, before he starts thinking he's any bigger a deal than he does already... I was fortunate enough to meet and work with Mr. Millan and a member of his "pack", when I engineered and directed the video portion of one of his live stage appearances. That beautiful (inside AND out) pit bull he brought was not only loveable, outgoing and completely stable under ALL conditions (no leash at any time that day), but was so "into it" that, even if she went off silently exploring the wings, or slipped backstage for a drink, suddenly there she'd be, sitting near me, off-stage-right, literally waiting for her next cue to "pop out" just in time to help Cesar illustrate whatever ... The danged dog was a HAM, too! This wasn't training - this was INVOLVEMENT! Sadly, we didn't record that day - it was great fun. I didn't "get" much of what he was imparting to the audience (...directing three cameras isn't necessarily conducive to a deep understanding of what's going on in front of them - just how to present it well, live-on-screen!) so I wanted to watch this DVD, myself, before I gave it to the kids. Even though I grew up with dogs through most of my life, and usually had good results training them, I learned a vast amount about the WHY of it from just these three episodes. Which leads directly into just about the ONLY disappointing thing about this disc - it's ONLY three episdoes long! We want more Cesar! Gotta go buy the next disc, drat the luck.... As for "How does this product compare to others?", the best response seems to be, WHAT others? I've read some nasty blogging about Cesar's alleged "violence", "cruelty" and "lack of understanding of MODERN dog psychology", mostly from people who have their own "systems" of so-called "training" to sell, but I have yet to see THEIR video(s) of THEM handling, and chilling-out, any insanely-aggressive 100-pound huskie(s) lunging at THEIR throat(s). (Not contained in this disc.)It doesn't strike me that the "clicker-and-reward" thing is gonna have much effect on that level of crazy-unstable (mis)behavior, but the "pack leader" thing sure works!

I bought this video for my daughter, who has a big dog named Max. She is already the "pack leader" but I thought this video would reinforce what she's already done with Max and teach her a few things she hadn't thought about. I was amazed that she didn't know anything about the Dog Whisperer. So I knew I HAD to make this introduction -- because I love her! She will be a better dog owner because of this video and will also be able to help others who have problems with their dogs. Cesar Millan is amazing. His sweetness and gentleness are always evident, but we can make no mistake regarding his underlying strength. He is the pack leader for all us other pack leaders out there. :-)I bought this video for my daughter, who has a big dog named Max. Just What I Wanted on EBAY
I wanted to purchase a number of these Dog Whisperer DVDs for friends for Christmas. I couldn't seem to find it anywhere local when out and about doing my Christmas shopping, fighting the crowd, negotiating traffic, stratigically planning my next move. So when all else failed, I turned to my computer. Upon finding a price for this DVD, I then turned to my new favorite place to shop, EBAY! Sure enough, there it was, and not surprisingly, CHEAPER! Upon winning my DVD, it was payed for at a click of a button and delivered right to my front door. When I think of the time and energy I spent trying to find this in the stores, I find myself realizing what a valuable lesson I have learned. Dog Whisperer with Cesar Millan: Volume 1 (2006, DVD)
I have been a fan of "The Dog Whisperer" since the begining. I am very impressed with his techiniques of teaching not only the dogs,but with the owners as well. In looking for a gift for my niece, I came across this DVD. My niece works at a no-kill shelter and works mainly with dogs. She is 22 years old, but has a learning disability. This DVD was a good way to show her techniques used in dog handling that are easily understandable. I hope to get her the next DVD in the series!I have been a fan of "The Dog Whisperer" since the begining.
